It’s Festival time! Author Alley time! Indigenous Creatures of the World and Chess Exhibition time! Join us this Saturday for our annual Larchmere Festival. Read on:

The sixth annual Larchmere Festival is this Saturday, July 7, from 10 am – 5 pm. Filled with antiques, flea market vendors, crafts, and entertainment galore, the Festival is a celebration of local arts, community, and independent business. We’ll have sidewalk sales and bargains, musical entertainment from jazz pianist George Foley and violinist Ariel Clayton, a squadron of Cleveland’s hippest new food trucks, Beat the Chess Expert, and an expanded section for Bazaar Bizarre. Author Alley (12-4pm) has almost 50 participants this year, including Mary Doria Russell, Tricia Springstubb, Cinda Williams Chima, Michael Heaton, Erin O’Brien, Arabella Proffer, and Carlo Wolff. It is a children's book from the 80's possibly that was about a child and a big boat and there was black jelly beans and cakes of soap somewhere in the book. Those are the things I remember most about the book. Thanks!

Opening Reception: Thursday, July 5, 6-8pm

Eugenia Vainberg learned the art of embroidery as a child of eight in her native Ukraine. After a long break, her love of the fiber arts was rekindled following her emigration to the United States. Of her work, the artist says, “Colors are music to me. Tonalities of colors, shades and hues create the feeling of melodies in me. Embroidery became an important part of my life, a way of self expression and reflection. It is very exciting to translate from the languages of different media into the tongue of embroidery.” Eugenia's work draws its inspiration from the theater, ballet, music, literature, and the natural world, but her particular passion involves re-interpreting Russian avant-garde art using the medium of thread and linen. Show continues through July 31.

Genevieve Jones, America's Other Audubon

Inspired by John James Audubon’s engravings at the 1876 World’s Fair, 29-year-old amateur naturalist Genevieve Jones embarked on her own project, Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio. When she died suddenly of typhoid fever, her family decided to finish her work, a labor of love that took seven years. Kiser, a former librarian with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will sign copies of her book, America's Other Audubon, as well as present a mini documentary on Jones, including details about the family's story, archival photographs and other information that could not be included in the book.

Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he will do so again.
