Please join us and author Charles D. Todder for a signing of his debut novel, Entelechy and Book 2. The novel follows Noah Gottlieb, a 19th century immigrant to rural Kentucky who is able to rise from humble beginnings to remarkable heights of importance and riches. Keeping a childhood promise to his mother, Noah builds an estate named Entelechy, from the Greek, “the innate knowing of one’s destiny.” Spanning almost one hundred years, this is a tale of reincarnation for the disbelieving, the story of life’s continuation into other times.

After a career as a professional ballet dancer and choreographer, Leigh Bennett has branched out into miriad other media, including, most recently, art made from recycled plastic bottles. Each piece takes many stages to complete; all are lightweight and filled with lots of color and movement. Come take in this inspiring world of colorful transformations!

At this month's Broadsides & Ephemera, Matt Greenfield, teacher by day and poet by night, will recite excerpts from his epic poem 14 years in the making, “The Fairly Tragic Ballad of Flailin’ McDrab.” After Western civilization falls, what is most likely: nuclear winter, the rise of zombies, or the return of the bardic tradition? Matt Greenfield, founder of The Oddy Festival (a mainly library-based theater lab), votes for the latter.

Afterwards, join us for an open-mic and share your own poetry or prose! Broadsides & Ephemera is a spoken word showcase by and for local writers. A perfect environment for shaping, sharing, and improving your poetry, prose, song, playwriting and performance art.

Horatio Alger, Jr. was very popular with young people at the turn of the century (the 20th Century that is) with titles such as RAGGED DICK and FROM FARM BOY TO SENATOR. Robert Huber became interested in collecting children’s series books (mostly pre-depression) such as Don Sturdy, Tom Swift, Mary Ott and others and learned the art of book collecting from his father, Gordon. Join Bob Huber and learn more about his collection and the “original” story of “success” through hard work and determination as told by Horatio Alger, Jr.

Thomas Cullinan: The Beguiled

Wounded and near death, a young Union Army corporal is found in the woods of Virginia during the height of the Civil War and brought to the nearby Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies. Almost immediately he sets about beguiling the three women and five teenage girls stranded in this outpost of Southern gentility, eliciting their love and fear, pity and infatuation, and pitting them against one another in a bid for his freedom. But as the women are revealed for what they really are, a sense of ominous foreboding closes in on the soldier, and the question becomes: Just who is the beguiled? The author's son, Tom Cullinan, will join us for a spirited discussion of his father's seminal 1966 novel, THE BEGUILED, which was recently adapted for film and directed by Sofia Coppola.

How do you build a relationship to tell a story that must be told while honoring the tender within the telling?

Hosted at Loganberry by ATNSC: Center for Healing & Creative Leadership, which exists to gather and nurture communal healing, creativity and leadership programming in service of birthing the individual and community capacity for a better world.

Join our opening reception to meet August's featured Artist, Michael Lombardy, and celebrate his new exhibit on view and for sale in the Loganberry Books Annex Gallery through August 2018.

Lombardy's work explores the use of symbols as a method for the storage and transmission of information. As a result of his multi-disciplinary practice, Lombardy is often left with a wide range of scraps, unused material, and tests for other projects. He says "By assembling these pieces I am both thinking of where I was at the time, where I am now, and where my mind will be in the future. Through these works my metaphysical worldview and my human urge to make material marks combine, creating between them a narrative similar to an artist's notebook."

Todd Michney: Surrogate Suburbs: Black Upward Mobility and Neighborhood Change in Cleveland, 1900–1980

Join professor and author Todd Michney for a book talk and signing of his recent book, Surrogate Suburbs. This history of Cleveland’s black middle class uncovers the creative ways that members of this community established footholds in areas outside the overcrowded, inner-city neighborhoods to which most African Americans were consigned. Surrogate Suburbs offers a valuable counterweight to histories that have focused on White Flight, racial conflict, and black poverty, and tells a neglected story of the black middle class in America’s cities prior to the 1960s.
