Wednesday, August 15, 7= pm-8:30pm
Between the world wars, no sport was more popular, or more= dangerous, than airplane racing. Thousands of fans flocked to multi=E2=80= =91day events, and cities vied with one another to host them, Fly Girls recounts how a cadre of women banded= together to break the glass ceiling that conspired to keep them out of t= he sky. The five women included Florence Klingensmith, a high=E2=80=91sch= ool dropout who worked for a dry cleaner in Fargo, North Dakota; Ruth Eld= er, an Alabama divorcee; Amelia Earhart, the most famous, but not necessa= rily the most skilled; Ruth Nichols, who chafed at the constraints of her= blue=E2=80=91blood family=E2=80=99s expectations; and Louise Thaden, the= mother of two young kids who got her start selling coal in Wichita. Toge= ther, they fought for the chance to race against the men =E2=80=94 and in= 1936 one of them would triumph in the toughest race of all.
