The Power of Poetry: An Introduction

In this 4-week introductory workshop we will explore and discover how poems are generated, crafted and refined. Each week, there will be writing prompts that will surprise and inspire, discussions on craft through the reading and sharing of poetry, and group feedback on your work. This class is appropriate for total beginners as well as those who want a refresher or who write in other genres but want to venture into verse. Leon R. Walker Jr. is a decorated Naval Veteran with more than eleven deployments to the Persian Gulf and other global conflicts. As a Navy Instructor, Recruiter, and drill sergeant, he was trusted to lead thousands of sailors during his career.

Jan Zorman: Perceptions

Please join us for a reception to celebrate Jan Zorman's new Annex Gallery Show, Perceptions, on view and for sale through June 2019!

Long intrigued with the idea of creating three dimensional drawings that viewers could see from a number of perspectives, Jan Zorman continues to pursue this interest in her two-dimensional work. She's discovered print-making's ability to incorporate color and texture and images as elements, and in her prints Zorman abstracts her own perceptions of the world - of events, places, time and emotions.

Jan Zorman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and has also lived in the Pacific Northwest, Boston, and Malawi. She has a BA in anthropology from the Ohio State University and a BFA in painting from the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Although she's worked primarily as an installation artist (frequently using fiber as a line in space), over the past several years she's been working as a printmaker.

Rachel Louise Snyder and Martina Latessa: No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us

Domestic violence happens every week in Cleveland – a wife murdered in the driveway, an arsonist torching the home of a sleeping mother and her children. Through the stories of victims, perpetrators, law enforcement, and reform movements from across the country, author Rachel Louise Snyder explores the real roots of domestic violence, its far-reaching consequences for society, and what it will take to truly address it. In her book, Snyder follows a Cleveland domestic violence detective dedicated to high risk cases--one of the only police officers of her kind in the country--Martina Latessa, who will be joining Rachel here at Loganberry Books.

Introducing the event will be Ohio House Representative Janine Boyd who wrote and sponsored Aisha’s Law. The bill is named for Aisha Fraser, a former Shaker Heights sixth-grade teacher who was stabbed to death by her ex-husband, former Cuyahoga County judge Lance Mason, in November 2018 following years of domestic abuse. Aisha’s law would require law enforcement officers responding to domestic violence complaints to utilize the Lethality Assessment Program, a strategy to identify high-risk situations that pose a threat of further violence.

McClendon is very interested in the role of poetry in social justice and in healing. He placed Seventh at the Individual World Poetry Slam in 2017. Damien also works in education, both organizing for social justice and working with Twelve Literary Arts, a resource for youth/novice writers. Laura and Sule will talk about the Rock Hall's collecting policies and will bring a few quirky items from the Library's collection to illustrate.

Shaker Square Area Development Corporation (SHAD) Kicks off Fourth of July festivities with the second annual Yankee Doodle Dash, a 5k run and 1-mile walk and kids’ run. The race finishes at the Skating Club where participants can enjoy an early Fourth of July celebration. Refreshments will be provided along with family-friendly activities such Zumba warm-up exercises, tennis, crafts and face painting. Proceeds from this event will assist SHAD in fulfilling its mission to support the Shaker Square neighborhood and promote the maintenance and preservation of this historically significant community.
