Loganberry News July 2019

Cleveland's Most Literary Month of the Year

July is shaping up to be an all-star month for Cleveland readers and writers--and our own Author Alley this Saturday is just the beginning. Every weekend this month, Loganberry is taking part in large multi-author events. Some, including the inaugural Cle Reads Teen Book Festival and the Lit Cleveland Inkubator, bring bestselling authors from across the country to connect with Cleveland book-lovers.

Connecting authors and readers can be life-changing for both, as Elizabeth Acevedo, author of Poet X, related in her keynote at the ABA Children's Institute, the national conference focused on children's books that I and Bookseller Leigh attended last week. Acevedo's own life was changed when she read Heaven by Angela Johnson in middle school, but it was Acevedo's own letters to the author that shaped the way Angela Johnson wrote its companion book, The First Part Last, a book she dedicated to Elizabeth Acevedo, who is now a National Book Award and Carnegie Medal winning author in her own right. We hope you'll come out to meet an author (or 50!) at one of our many upcoming events and make this July your best yet.

Marissa Orr: Lean Out: The Truth About Women, Power, and the Workplace
Wednesday, July 17, 2019, 7pm
Lean Out is not simply a retort to Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In premise, which Marissa believes is based on a masculine worldview. Rather, her vision is a revolutionary path forward that has the power to change the lives of men and women in the corporate world and beyond. Marissa calls for a complete overhaul to the business world’s limited, carefully constructed paradigm of what constitutes a successful leader in today’s day and age. Instead of listening to the voices of hierarchy telling women why they need to be more like men to succeed, Marissa suggests finding ways to better value the talent that women already bring to the table.

Marissa Orr spent 15 years working at today’s top tech giants, Google and Facebook, forming her views on leadership, gender, and teamwork.

Bucket List Book Club

Edith James: The Buccaneers
Wednesday, July 24, 2019, 7pm
~fourth Wednesdays~
Nan and Jinny St George have both wealth and beauty in generous supply. In the New York society of the 1870s, however, only those with old money can achieve the status of the elite, and it is here that the sisters seem doomed to failure. Nan's new governess, Laura Testvalley, herself an outsider, takes pity on their plight and launches them instead on the unsuspecting British aristocracy. A love story of love and marriage among the old and new moneyed classes, The Buccaneers is a delicately perceptive portrayal of a world on the brink of change.

The Bucket List Book Club is led by former Loganberry staffer and writer Susan Petrone. We guarantee a spirited discussion!
