National Novel Writing Month 2019

Writing might be a solitary experience, but it doesn't have to be lonely. Join your fellow NaNoWriMoers at Loganberry every Friday in November (except the last, Black Friday) to crank out words in a bookish haven and offer comradeship. Tables will be set up with outlet access to get some quiet writing done, and Otis will be around with encouraging "mrows." Snacks and drinks are welcome, but keep it neat, and no fish please. If you come every Friday throughout the month, you'll be entered in a drawing for a special NaNoWriMo mug!

Best remembered as the “attending doctor” at the famous 1804 duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, David Hosack is a key figure in the history of New York and of botany in America. Victoria Johnson’s biography tells the amazing story of a physician, botanist, educator and forward-thinking, civic minded visionary, who, among his other contributions, Hosack, created the Elgin Botanical Garden in Manhattan (today buried under Rockefeller Center) for the purpose of educating medical students and doing scientific research. Come and join our conversation about this Founding Father and early American Naturalist.

Carl Weitman: Make Way for Robert McCloskey

A perennial favorite among children's picture books, Make Way for Ducklings is the most famous of Robert McCloskey's books and was the winner of the 1942 Caldecott Awards. Robert McCloskey hailed from Ohio but summered on an island off the coast of Maine where many of his stories are set. This forum will be led by NOBS member Carl Weitman, who has been a collector of McCloskey for many years.

For almost 50 years, the Larchmere Holiday Stroll has been our kick-off to the holiday season, featuring horse and buggy rides 12:00-4:00pm, cider and cookies, and other special events by participating Larchmere merchants. Otis' Old Curiosity Shop, Loganberry's popular holiday pop-up shop, will be in full swing. We will also be celebrating Indies First, a national celebration of independent bookstores and authors, with a range of activities and special gifts for you, our loyal customers. Our star attraction will be book signings by local authors each day of the stroll--details below!
