Warming up

Happy Memorial Day! It's been a slow, warm spring, an= d my garden is ahead of schedule. I can't remember when I last felt ahead= of schedule. My overwintering butterflies are ahead of schedule too -- a= lready 2 Eastern Black Swallowtails and 3 Spicebush Swallowtails have ecl= osed from their overwintering chrysalides. There are more Spicebush to co= me, and their enclosure is at Loganberry (in our sunny Annex Gallery), so= if you're lucky, you might get to see one when you stop in. I've named t= hem through the alphabet of children's literature: Abigail, Beezus, Charl= otte, Diana, and Eric. Nature is always right on time...Thank you, Eric Carle, for sharing your talent with us. Fly.

Larry Rako= w was a collector long before he became a dealer in old and rare children= =E2=80=99s books. At his business, Wonderland Books, he continues to add = primarily 19th century pop-up and movable books to his collection, and he= will share his =E2=80=9Ctop ten=E2=80=9D Victorian pop-ups with us - vol= umes that have escaped the onslaught of years, the hands of countless chi= ldren, and the haphazard treatment that old books generally receive.

=

Following = Larry=E2=80=99s presentation, NOBS members are invited to share a favorit= e book from their collection(s) and the story/history that goes along wit= h it. We bet there are some great stories out there! Non-NOBS members interested in attending: email= Freddy@logan.com and a Zoom link will be provided before= the event.

Harriett is listening to: Broken Horses= by Brandi Carlile: "I was reading a hard book and got distr= acted by Brandi Carlile. She's easy to like. Down-to-earth, honest, kind,= and hard working. Her new memoir isn't a hard book, not even a hard, pai= nful life (although everyone has their challenges, it is true). But she w= as great company, and a nice respite from the hard things in my life. Bon= us! I highly recommend the audiobook because THERE IS MUSIC. That's right= , you hear about Brandi's coming-of-age through music, and at the end of = each chapter read by Brandi, she sings the songs that she alluded to. All= solo and acoustic (no doubt demanded so by copyright laws), and spot-on.= Now I want every audiobook to have music. Check it out in our Libro.fm audiobook store.

Miranda is reading Beyond the Gender Binary by = Alok Vaid-Menon and One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston:
I love seeing Alok Vaid-Memon's new perspective on gender--as som= ething beyond a performance but as a form of self-expression! And in Case= y McQuiston's new YA romance, I'm excited to join a skeptical twenty-some= thing protagonist on a journey through time (not in the way you may think= ) as she starts to believe."
