My overwintering butterflies are ahead of schedule too -- already 2 Eastern Black Swallowtails and 3 Spicebush Swallowtails have eclosed from their overwintering chrysalides. There are more Spicebush to come, and their enclosure is at Loganberry (in our sunny Annex Gallery), so if you're lucky, you might get to see one when you stop in. I've named them through the alphabet of children's literature: Abigail, Beezus, Charlotte, Diana, and Eric. Nature is always right on time...Thank you, Eric Carle, for sharing your talent with us. Brandy Schillace is a medical historian and a critically acclaimed author. We're thrilled to welcome photographer Becky Grasser for her new show, Lines & Arcs, on view and for sale in the Annex Gallery through the month of June. With professional training and experience as an engineer, Becky Grasser has always enjoyed seeing mathematics take on form and function in the physical world. The images in this show that take you deep into the page, allowing patterns to unfold though the scene. Becky captures images using digital technology, but then steps back to the beginning of photography to print them, using the process of gum bichromate printing, developed in the late 1830's and modified regularly since then. | Local Voices: Pilgrim Press Spotlight Miguel A. De La Torre is a scholar-activist and a professor of social ethics and Latino/a studies at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado. He has published over thirty-five books, five of which won national awards. Drop in between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm on Saturday, June 19, to meet author Margaret Bernstein, who has written a trio of storybooks designed for fathers to read with their children: All In a Dad's Day, Donuts With Dad and her latest, The Fathers Walk. Margaret's books will be available and there will also be donuts and a fun selfie station! A Los Angeles native, Margaret Bernstein earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Southern California. In 1989 she was hired at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland. She is the 2008 winner of the National Association of Black Journalists’ Community Service Award. Larry Rakow was a collector long before he became a dealer in old and rare children’s books. At his business, Wonderland Books, he continues to add primarily 19th century pop-up and movable books to his collection, and he will share his “top ten” Victorian pop-ups with us - volumes that have escaped the onslaught of years, the hands of countless children, and the haphazard treatment that old books generally receive. Following Larry’s presentation, NOBS members are invited to share a favorite book from their collection(s) and the story/history that goes along with it. She's easy to like. Down-to-earth, honest, kind, and hard working. Her new memoir isn't a hard book, not even a hard, painful life (although everyone has their challenges, it is true). But she was great company, and a nice respite from the hard things in my life. Bonus! I highly recommend the audiobook because THERE IS MUSIC. That's right, you hear about Brandi's coming-of-age through music, and at the end of each chapter read by Brandi, she sings the songs that she alluded to. All solo and acoustic (no doubt demanded so by copyright laws), and spot-on. Now I want every audiobook to have music.
