Loganberry News June 2021

Warming up

Happy Memorial Day! It's been a slow, warm spring, and my garden is ahead of schedule. I can't remember when I last felt ahead of schedule. My overwintering butterflies are ahead of schedule too -- already 2 Eastern Black Swallowtails and 3 Spicebush Swallowtails have eclosed from their overwintering chrysalides. There are more Spicebush to come, and their enclosure is at Loganberry (in our sunny Annex Gallery), so if you're lucky, you might get to see one when you stop in. I've named them through the alphabet of children's literature: Abigail, Beezus, Charlotte, Diana, and Eric. Nature is always right on time...Thank you, Eric Carle, for sharing your talent with us. Fly.

When Jack and Kate meet at a party, bonding until sunrise over their mutual love of Froot Loops and their favorite flicks, Jack knows he’s falling—hard. Soon she’s meeting his best friends, Jillian and Franny, and Kate wins them over as easily as she did Jack. But then Kate dies. And their story should end there. Yet Kate’s death sends Jack back to the beginning, the moment they first meet, and Kate’s there again...

Not YA Average Book Club (NYABC) is anything but average! Open to teens age 15-18. We will have a fun discussion and an even more fun activity (please have a writing utensil and paper ready- don't worry this won't be "ya average" classroom activity!) Register to join the free event here.

NOBS Forum

Collector's Showcase: Larry Rakow
Thursday, June 24, 7:30pm
~4th Thursdays, online, via Zoom~
Larry Rakow was a collector long before he became a dealer in old and rare children’s books. At his business, Wonderland Books, he continues to add primarily 19th century pop-up and movable books to his collection, and he will share his “top ten” Victorian pop-ups with us - volumes that have escaped the onslaught of years, the hands of countless children, and the haphazard treatment that old books generally receive.

Following Larry’s presentation, NOBS members are invited to share a favorite book from their collection(s) and the story/history that goes along with it. We bet there are some great stories out there! Non-NOBS members interested in attending: email Freddy@logan.com and a Zoom link will be provided before the event.

Harriett is listening to: Broken Horses by Brandi Carlile: "I was reading a hard book and got distracted by Brandi Carlile. She's easy to like. Down-to-earth, honest, kind, and hard working. Her new memoir isn't a hard book, not even a hard, painful life (although everyone has their challenges, it is true). But she was great company, and a nice respite from the hard things in my life. Bonus! I highly recommend the audiobook because THERE IS MUSIC. That's right, you hear about Brandi's coming-of-age through music, and at the end of each chapter read by Brandi, she sings the songs that she alluded to. All solo and acoustic (no doubt demanded so by copyright laws), and spot-on. Now I want every audiobook to have music. Check it out in our Libro.fm audiobook store.

Wendy is reading The Liar’s Dictionary by Eley Williams "This book holds the intertwining stories of a Victorian-era lexicographer, who inserts fictional entries into a dictionary, and his modern-day counterpart, who is tasked with finding these fantastical words, while also finding the courage to define her true un-closeted self."

9781609387563

Miesha is reading The Cleveland Heights LGBTQ Sci-Fi & Fantasy and Role Playing Club by Doug Henderson and The Eighth Key by Laura Weyr: "Both these romance novels are well-written, sexy, and trauma-free! Perfect beach reads for warm weather happiness. In Cleveland Heights LGBTQ, a Dungeons & Dragons group on Coventry forms the backdrop for an endearing 20-something male/male meetcute. The Eighth Key is a fantasy romance written by three-time Hugo finalist Laura Weyr, who couples the fantasy genre with a sumptuous romance between her male characters.

9781620104996

Elisabeth is reading A Quick & Easy Guide to They/Them Pronouns by Archie Bongiovanni and Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals by Alexis Pauline Gumbs: "Quick & Easy Guide is just what it says: a quick, easy, and FUN invitation for ages 13 and up to use language to build a world that not only includes but cherishes all gender identities. Undrowned is nature writing like you've never read it: inspiring and invigorating queer Black Femme kinship with the entire living world. It's changed my life."

9780062252074

*Lorraine is reading: Red: A Crayon’s Story by Michael Hall* "This is the sweet tale of the difficulties of a blue crayon mislabeled “red.” Good humored, non preachy, and brightly colored picture book about self esteem and acceptance. Works as a metaphor for the trans experience."

9780593094655

Miranda is reading Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon and One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston:
I love seeing Alok Vaid-Memon's new perspective on gender--as something beyond a performance but as a form of self-expression! And in Casey McQuiston's new YA romance, I'm excited to join a skeptical twenty-something protagonist on a journey through time (not in the way you may think) as she starts to believe."

81wvp3pBoCL

Julie is reading The Secret To Superhuman Strength by Allison Bechdel: "I would recommend any of Allison Bechdel's books, but I just read The Secret to Superhuman Strength and it's her best yet! Watch out for its appearance in the Loganberry staff book club in the future!"
