Loganberry News September 2021 Falling into good books! My last monarch of the season eclosed today. These last ones will be part of the Great Gener Falling into good books! My last monarch of the season eclosed today. These last ones will be part of the Great Generation, the ones who fly to Mexico. In total, I’ve raised and released 40 butterflies this summer, mostly monarchs. It may be a minuscule act in the world of international affairs, but it’s something. And it’s a cheerful, life-affirming thing to do. In this world of strife, it’s good to focus on something small. Building empathy is a good exercise too. In this issue of eNews, our staff picks focus on Latinx titles, and we promote our Science sale. Follow us on social media for more picks, including titles by Afghani authors and climate change studies. And let us know what you’re reading. There’s nothing that thrills a bookseller more than a good book recommendation!

Watercolor Retrospective presents 20 years of art created by Lois Davis, a 55-year resident of Cleveland Heights. Her work mainly incorporates watercolor and collage. John B. Burroughs serves as the 2019-2021 Beat Poet Laureate for the State of Ohio. His most recent book is Rattle and Numb: Selected and New Poems from Venetian Spider Press. He has performed his poetry in myriad places from Oakland to New York City. He currently moderates the Cleveland Poetics blog and Northeast Ohio Literary Calendar at clevelandpoetry.com and since 2008 has served as the founding editor for independent publisher Crisis Chronicles Press. Richard Gildenmeister is a Cleveland legend. He was a master bookseller, beginning his career in 1955 at Higbee's under Anne Udin. He initiated and perfected the live author event, hosting and befriending luminaries such as Barbara Walters, Dare Wright, Truman Capote, and others. After Higbee's, Richard worked at Booksellers, Burrows, Joseph-Beth, Appletree, and his own Richard Gildenmeister Bookstore on the Square (1976-1981). Richard befriended everyone he met, authors and readers alike, and will be remembered by his uncanny enthusiasm for life and for connecting people and books. A resident and long-term champion of Shaker Square, Richard is commemorated with a plaque at the island of the North Moreland intersection. Come raise a glass and tip your hat to Richard in this celebration of life, featuring live music from The Blue Drivers. Elijah is in Cleveland visiting his grandparents when he finds out that his favorite band is having a concert at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band is giving out free tickets but the catch is that you have to find the band members at various landmarks throughout Cleveland. Join NOBS, Fran Stewart, and Restore Cleveland Hope board member Jeanne Van Atta, as they recount Joan Southgate's 519-mile walk from Ripley, OH, to Canada, and onward to the creation of her dream: the restoration of the historic Cozad Bates house. Twenty years ago, Joan Southgate set off on a journey, during which she retraced the steps of the Underground Railroad from Southern Ohio to Canada. When she returned, she and local writer and historian Fran Stewart wrote a book, IN HER PATH, about her walk and the Underground Railroad in Ohio. Southgate’s walk and her book culminated most recently with the opening of the Underground Railroad Interpretive Center in July 2021. As a renowned kidney transplant surgeon and one of a small number of African Americans to hold such a title, Dr. Charles Modlin has overcome enormous odds. In It Isn't Difficult, he shares successful strategies used to overcome challenges and accomplish his goals to encourage high school students and college students whose ambition is to succeed in life. Dr. Charles Modlin is a urologist and kidney transplant surgeon, one of fewer than 20 African-American transplant surgeons in the United States. Practicing in Cleveland for more than 22 years, he transformed an interest in why African-Americans suffer a disproportionate share of diseases into programs assisting minority communities.
