Independent Bookstore Day 2022

Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. Independent Bookstores are living, breathing organisms that continue to grow and expand. In fact, there are more of us this year than there were last year!

Join us at Loganberry Books on April 30 as we celebrate Independent Bookstore Day all day long, along with 872 other indie bookstore across the country. We'll have books, gifts, tchotchkes, & swag developed exclusively for this event, as well as Raffles, Wordle contests, and Wheel of Fortune prizes to say thank you for shopping indie.

As part of saying thank you to our community, Loganberry will donate 10% of all IBD sales to the Kids Book Bank Books Like Me campaign to get children's books by people of color, featuring diverse characters, to kids around NE Ohio.

The first half of the 17th century brought war to Europe like never before. Young Piotr Nowak’s family is caught up in the maelstrom of violence, and he is forced to flee his home. Penniless and alone, he finds passage on a ship bound for the New World. Jana Mueller loses her father to the foreign soldiers quartering in her village. Sent away from the violence to Ireland, she starts her training as a nun, and is assigned to a ship leaving for Quebec City. When the two ships leave port, a journey is initiated that will weave the lives of the travelers together with a new land and the people in it.

Jim Redwood grew up in Delaware County, Ohio. He has an undergraduate degree in Education from Bowling Green State University and a Master’s degree in Special Education from Ashland University.

Monica Weber Babcock: A Melancholy Union

Weaving meticulous research with imagination, Monica Weber Babcock in A Melancholy Union gives voice to her great-great-grandparents Samuel and Julia, survivors of the Irish Potato Famine who emigrated to the United State in the 1850s. As they recount their lives through alternating chapters, they draw us into their turbulent world shaped by hunger, hope, poverty, love, sickness, and haunting memories of Civil War battlefields. Finally, they describe how, in struggling to care for their family, they make desperate decisions leading to unimagined consequences.

Monica Weber Babcock has taught writing at John Carroll University and Lorain County Community College. Her book of poetry, Heartscape, was released in 2013 and her first novel Burden of Remembrance in 2018.

Ava Reiss is a writer and illustrator from the Cleveland area. Her written works are science-fiction and fantasy, and she often turns to art for inspiration. Romantically, she recognizes we're all stardust and believes humanity holds a deeper connection to the cosmos than we take time to see. She hopes her installation will inspire others to relax by disconnecting from the day-to-day and drift pleasantly through the various colors and moods of the galaxy.

Community Poetry Reading featuring: Doc Janning

Broadsides & Ephemera returns LIVE at Loganberry Books, and featuring a new format of the featured poet reading for half an hour, followed by a Q&A. Don't despair if you can't make it; we are looking into offering a hybrid version as well.

Our featured reader this month is Doc Janning! Doc is the Inaugural Poet Laureate of The City of South Euclid. He has created Ekphrastic Poetry for Heights Arts and for Cleveland Photo Fest. Doc is Moderator of Second Sunday Poets, Creator-Moderator of Awenites, and a Featured Reader for poetry events around the world, is included in twenty anthologies, and has had individual poems published on La Hermosa Bruja, and by PoemHunter.com.

Emma Riva: Night Shift in Tamaqua

Lance Miller and Ellen Kostopoulou don’t have much in common, but they’re both awake between two and five in the morning. Lance is a Postmates delivery guy with a broken down car; he lives alone with his five dogs, insecure that he’s one of the few Jewish people in Tamaqua, PA. Ellen is an overworked graveyard shift waitress and an insomniac wracked with guilt over the fact that she didn’t complete her education. One night, Ellen offers Lance a ride. From there, two night owl misfits discover they each can offer the other something to heal their wounds and ease their loneliness.

Emma Riva is a novelist and fine arts journalist who has been writing for as long as she can remember. She is a graduate of The New School, and her fiction has received accolades from the UK-based Wilbur and Niso Smith Foundation and Rainy Day, Cornell University's literary magazine. She recently covered Cleveland's own Graffiti HeArt gallery on Superior Avenue. She lives in Pittsburgh.

After moving to her mothers’ home, the dysfunctional relationships continued for years. A life full of low self-esteem, promiscuity and one bad relationship after another continued until Layla sought her power back from all those that had taken advantage of her. This story will inspire you to look within for the strength to push forward.

Denise Monique is a married mother of five children and eight grandchildren and a licensed social worker and loves to travel as much as possible. She is very passionate about helping others find the light within themselves to start their path to better lives.

Stephen Heyman: The Planter of Modern Life

What do Malabar Farm, Humphrey Bogart, and soil conservation have in common? Louis Bromfield was born in Mansfield, Ohio, went on to become a WWII ambulance driver, Pulitzer Prize-winning author in the 1920's, an ex-pat in France, and an important conservationist. With his experimental farm, Malabar Farm, Bromfield played an important role in the environmental movement we know today. Bromfield's story is one not to be forgotten and very important in the world's discussion of sustainable agriculture and organic farming today.

Robert Kehew: Lark in the Morning: The Verses of the Troubadours

Lark in the Morning brings together verse translations of medieval troubadours’ lyrics by Ezra Pound, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.D. Snodgrass, and Robert Kehew. These songs of romantic love, with pleasing melodies and intricate stanzaic patterns, have inspired poets and song writers ever since, from Dante to Chaucer, from Renaissance sonneteers to the Romantics, and from Verlaine and Rimbaud to modern rock lyricists. Translations from Lark in the Morning will be featured during two upcoming concerts by Cleveland’s own medieval music vocal trio, Trobár.

Robert Kehew is a poet and playwright. Mr. Kehew lived in Kenya from 2009 to 2020, where he worked for the UN; he currently lives with his wife and two children in Arlington, Virginia.

An Evening with Echo Brown

Join award-winning YA novelist and playwright Echo Brown for a talk on the spiritual practices that have influenced her life, career choices, and literary works. From yoga, meditation, shamanism, tantra, and creative development; to healing suicidal depression through EMDR and generative coaching. After her kidneys failed, Echo was forced to do some of the deepest spiritual healing of her life, coming to a new understanding of the world and her place in it. *This a free event, but registration is required here.*

Echo Brown is the author of Black Girl Unlimited: The Remarkable Story of a Teenage Wizard, which was named a William C. Morris Award Finalist, a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, a New York Public Library Best Book of the Year, a CCBC Choice Title, among other honors; as well as The Chosen One: A First-Generation Ivy League Odyssey . A performer and playwright, Echo created the acclaimed one-woman show Black Virgins Are Not for Hipsters. She is a Dartmouth alumna and the first female college graduate in her family.

Tom Balbo is a Cleveland-based artist whose work has been collected for well over 30 years. Tom teamed up with noted Cleveland-area artists and national hand paper-making artists to improve and conserve the art of paper & book arts educational programming in the US and the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation officially opened its doors in October 2008.

Otis' Retirement Party

Otis walked up 14 years ago and demanded a job. He was persistent, good looking, and quite nimble on a ladder, so I took him on. It was an excellent decision. He made friends with everyone, knew his jurisdictions well, and was stellar with marketing.

Some time after his 10th birthday party (complete with art contests and party favors), he developed feline diabetes and pancreatitis, both of which contribute to the other and proved difficult to manage. He's doing fine at the moment, but he's happier at home these days. You may have noticed that he isn't in the bookstore as often (and sometimes his little sister Alice is). I just wanted to make this announcement officially: Otis is retiring from Loganberry Books.

Thanks to all his fans and well-wishers, he appreciates all your ear skritches and head pats. We'll celebrate with cat-cakes and raffles, and raise some funds for the Weirdo Cat Lovers of Cleveland. Enjoy your well-earned retirement, Otis!

Colby Smith: Ironic Skeletons

In Ironic Skeletons, D.W. Lambert works with fossils of an unusual character - so unusual they shouldn't really exist. And, perhaps, they don't. The Ironic Skeletons, uncertainty conquers certainty, madness and science intertwine, and the sacred is indistinguishable from the profane.

Colby Smith was born and raised in southern West Virginia and is currently based in Cleveland, Ohio. His fiction has appeared in numerous anthologies and his nonfiction has appeared in Vastarien, Spontaneous Poetics, and regularly in The Aither. His debut short story collection, The Universe as Performance Art, is forthcoming from Eibonvale Press.

Her awards and honors include fellowships and grants from the Ohio Arts Council, the Greater Columbus Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She teaches at The Ohio State University.

Author Alley is one of Loganberry Books' signature annual events, celebrating local authors of all genres from across Ohio, and the application to participate in Author Alley 2022 is now available on our website!

Over the past 20 years, the event has grown to be the largest book fair hosted by an independent bookstore in northern Ohio. Last year, we welcomed over 60 authors and thousands of readers to our celebrations, and this year promises the same excitement, spread across three weekends in August.
