Loganberry News May 2022

Bookies unite! This Saturday, April 30 is bookstore holiday, aka Independent Bookstore Day! It's kinda like a birthday party you throw for yourself. No, it totally is. It's definitely our birthday. And we intend to celebrate for as long as we can. Case in point? 22 Book events coming up, including 3 nationally renowned authors (Adriana Trigiani! Dan Chaon! Echo Brown!), book clubs, seminars, and signings. We'll drink a toast to Otis and learn about Malabar Farm, get serious about poetry, paper making, and prizes. We might need a vacation soon.

Otis' Retirement Party

Sunday, May 29, 2022, 1-5pm
~in-store~
Otis walked up 14 years ago and demanded a job. He was persistent, good looking, and quite nimble on a ladder, so I took him on. It was an excellent decision. He made friends with everyone, knew his jurisdictions well, and was stellar with marketing.

Some time after his 10th birthday party (complete with art contests and party favors), he developed feline diabetes and pancreatitis, both of which contribute to the other and proved difficult to manage. He's doing fine at the moment, but he's happier at home these days. You may have noticed that he isn't in the bookstore as often (and sometimes his little sister Alice is). I just wanted to make this announcement officially: Otis is retiring from Loganberry Books.

Thanks to all his fans and well-wishers, he appreciates all your ear skritches and head pats. We'll celebrate with cat-cakes and raffles, and raise some funds for the Weirdo Cat Lovers of Cleveland. Enjoy your well-earned retirement, Otis!

Harriett is reading A History of Scars: A Memoir by Laura Lee "In this excruciatingly honest book of autobiographical essays, Laura Lee exposes her fears and desires, rock climbing through her childhood trauma, cooking her Korean legacy, battling the illnesses visibly and invisibly manifested in her family and herself. Her pacing is exquisite. Her foothold on every rock outcropping is secure and measured, to help her reach the next step of her route. Even in the scariest crux, her bravery and her vulnerability is admirable."

Julie is reading: Magical Boy by The Kao: "This comic (aimed at teen readers but great for readers of any age!) is by a Taiwanese American artist who riffs off Magical Girl Sailor Moon. The main character, Max, is a trans teen boy who is very displeased to learn that he's the descendent of a long line of magical girls, and is now expected to take on that mantle. Will he be able to get rid of the monsters, please his mother, and integrate with his new identity to become a Magical Boy? Enjoy this delightful book and find out!"

LV-Space Tigers

Miesha is reading Space Tigers by Ava Reiss, "a children’s picture book about two kittens from the planet Catopia, a place that proved to be no utopia for the two cat sisters who got bullied for their colorless coats of fur. They fly to Earth where a boy and his cat appreciate the sisters for their other talents and compassion. With its gorgeous illustrations and poetic language, Space Tigers is sure to delight young readers."

The Strange Library r1-300x450

Wendy is reading The Strange Library by Haruki Murakami: "This illustrated novella tells the story of a boy trapped in a surreal library. Designed by Chip Kidd, the book can be treasured as a work of art, as well as a unique story that seems to be pulled directly from one of Murakami's nightmares."

WhenTheWhalesLeave 300dpi RGB

Elisabeth is reading When The Whales Leave by Yuri Rytkheu*: "This marvelously mythic little novella, set in a settlement of indigenous Chukchi people in the Pacific Arctic, was originally published in Russian in 1975 and only translated into English into 2020. It can be read as an ecoparable of interrelatedness but also an intimate story of community life in an indigenous village. A wonderful gem."

9780060856267

Sarah is recommending First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung: "Loung is a survivor of the Cambodian Killing Fields. Heartbreaking, and inspiring, it’s a must-read for understanding history; the horrific reality of war and the power of an individual to survive."

81oK-JJQnZL

*Toni is reading Midnight, Water City by Chris McKinney :* "Futuristic sci-fi noir police procedural with climate awareness, set in Hawaii by a Hawaiian author? Oh my! I am so excited about this book. Set in an underwater city in 2142, this inventive, imaginative book, both entertaining and unsettling, was one of Publishers Weekly's best mysteries of 2021 and a Locus magazine must-read."

Interpreterofmaladiescover

*Freddy is reading: Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri* "This debut collection of short stories won the Pulitzer Prize in 1999. All of the stories speak to a new, first generation of Indians caught between their roots and this new world they had come to make their home. Blending cultures is not a new theme but Lahiri's empathetic writing makes each of these stories seem unique and gets the reader involved quickly."
