Loganberry News November 2022

Otis has retired, but his Old Curiosity Shop has not. We are currently in the beginning stages of setting up this holiday pop-up shop, even while we lament the end of Daylight Saving Time. But we're also still in autumn mentality, with NaNoWriMo write-ins, book signings, and book clubs in full force. These endings and beginnings are part of life. Now is the perfect time to begin those elusive out-of-print book searches for the holiday gift-giving season, and to special order anything you've got your heart set on giving. Alice the White Cat, (Otis' successor), and we are happy to embark on our 28th year in business in your company!

Harriett recommends Visual Thinking by Temple Grandin: "At last, a treatise on visual thinking. Predictably, Grandin explores the usefulness of visual thinking in construction-type scenarios, risk assessment, and animal thought and communication. But she continues the exploration to include partnerships of different kinds of thinkers (including some famous pairs), the overlap with neurodivergent minds and even genius, and the unfortunate failure of American schools to foster visual thinkers. And she distinguishes two kinds of visual thinkers: object visualizers and spatial visualizers. I've been waiting for this book, and welcome it with open arms."

51WTC2IGCiL. AC SY780

Wendy recommends Waterlog by Roger Deakin: "A beautiful book, and a great gift for people who like swimming, nature, and all things British!"

9781849353977

Elisabeth recommends Undrowned by Alexis Pauline Gumbs: "Part nature writing, part womanist manifesto, and all parts joyful and boundary-breaking, this little book on the liberatory power of sea creatures is one of my favorite gifts to share with all kinds of readers."

9780811231947

Sarah recommends The Wall by Marlen Haushofer "Originally published in 1963 in German, this reissued classic about a woman cut off from the rest of the world by a invisible wall is strange, powerful and thought provoking."

51bsHhk0BAL. AC SY780

Toni recommends _Creative, Not Famous: The Small Potato Manifesto by Ayun Halliday: "A rallying cry for the importance of creativity in everyday life and a celebration of creative people, regardless of fame or fortune. This compilation of practical advice, inspiration, and whimsy was created by my favorite zine and alternative theater maker, Ayun Halliday."

41OtsmHYJLL. AC SY780

Brenda recommends Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz: "Because you really can’t wait for new PBS series to reveal 'who done it'!"

download

Devon recommends Just in Case by Meg Rosoff: "Just In Case is both a funny and sad read. The main character is suffering from various mental illnesses when a near-death experience pushes him over the edge. This story is about his journey figuring himself out while dealing with his own demons, love, and family."

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid-1

Cat recommends Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid: "Another phenomenal novel from Taylor Jenkins Reid about the complexities of human emotions, and the depths of love present within families no matter how tumultuous relationships may become."

9781419751974

Rachel recommends M Is for Monster by Talia Dutton: "Frances is determined to bring her sister Maura, killed six months ago in a tragic accident, back to the land of the living. Much like the original Dr. Frankenstein, Frances is dismayed by the result of her revival attempts; the person she brings back is not the Maura who her sister remembers. "M" has her own goals and desires, and bucks Frances' attempts to force her into a Maura-shaped mold. Much as Frankenstein was an allegory for science pushed beyond ethical borders, this contemporary YA graphic restyling addresses queerness, identity, family and grief. "

9780143107286

Elijah recommends Faces of Love: Hafez and the Poets of Shiraz translated by Dick Davis: "Soaring lyrics of erotic-divine longing by Persia's greatest poet, translated into beautiful and exacting English verse by Farsi's greatest translator, Ohioan poet-scholar Dick Davis."

9780823446247

Freddy recommends: Watercress by Andrea Wang; Illustrations by Jason Chin: "As a grandmother I love giving my grandkids both the Caldecott and Newbery award books and in particular the Caldecott which is given to the most distinguished picture book illustrator each year. Watercress is not only a very sweet story, but one about the power of sharing stories, including difficult ones, between generations."
