The cycles of growth, the seasons, are embodiments of her feminine spirit, but everyone can relate to the cycle of life and death, of love and loss. There's something about the ache of the pandemic here too, and the yearning for human connection. I'm also excited by the anthology she edited, You Are Here: Poetry in the Natural World, with its perennial Earth Day connection, and this summer's National Parks tour." | Cara recommends Red Bird by Mary Oliver: "I had to read this wonderful collection almost like a devotional - one poem a morning - so I didn't devour it in one go. Oliver's writing is gorgeous, and when I read her poems, I feel like there is hope left yet in this world." | Elisabeth recommends Enheduana translated and edited by Sophus Helle: "Did you know that the first author known to sign their work was a Sumerian priestess more than 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia? I didn't until I picked up this wonderful translation of her songs, hymns and poems, with great additional commentary and essays on Enheduana and her world." | Elijah recommends Love In Another Language by Dick Davis: "Dick Davis is not only a professor emeritus at Ohio State, not only the most highly acclaimed translator of Persian poetry in the world, but also a beautiful poet in his own right. This volume collects all his previous books of poetry into a treasury of one of the greatest bodies of work in Ohioan letters. A must read!" | Wendy recommends Eyes, Stones by Elana Bell: "The poems in this debut collection resonate just as loudly today as they did when they were published in 2012. Told through the eyes of both Jews and Arabs, Bell's poems unflinchingly depict the reality of life in a place that has served as a homeland and a war zone for too long." | Sarah recommends Selected Poems, 1950-2012 by Adrienne Rich: "Rich's poetry has spoken to me over the decades. As she said: 'Every poem breaks a silence that had to be overcome.' A favorite example: I've walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don't be fooled this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here, our country moving closer to its own truth and dread, its own ways of making people disappear." | Julie recommends Home Body by Rupi Kaur: "Her voice as a strong woman who overcomes obstacles is very inspiring to me." | Toni recommends The Tigers, They Let Me by Anis Mojgani " 'There was a hole in his chest/ for birds to fly in and out of ...' The latest book by one of my favorite poets. This collection is tender, inventive, beautiful writing about the joys of desire and the experience of loneliness. Mojgani's poems range from fleeting and spare free verse to lengthy prose poems that open like rooms of language around you." | Devon recommends The Blue Mimes by Sara Daniele Rivera "The Blue Mimes explores political and social upheaval in the United States, while also focusing on the individual experience of navigating such events, both presently and in memory. Sara Daniele Rivera intertwines English and Spanish to present a collection of poetry that is deeply personal, while remaining recognizable to others who have also lived these experiences." | Coming next month: Books to Celebrate Asian American + Pacific Islander Heritage Month | Thanks for reading, Harriett & all the Loganberries | ▪ Open Mon-Wed, Fri-Sat: 10-6, Thurs: 10am-8:30, Sun 12-5 ▪ Masks recommended ▪ It's so nice to see you, thanks for stopping by! ▪ | Open Mon-Wed, Fri-Sat: 10-6, Thurs: 10am-8:30, Sun 12-5 | ▪ | It's so nice to see you, thanks for stopping by! | | | | | |
