Bookstores East and West, North and South, Old and New
Indie bookstores from around NE Ohio will be participating: from Parma to Chagrin Falls, to the East and West sides of Cleveland, and as far south as Akron and Medina. Some stores have been around since the 1960s, while others are only a year or two old.
Some established stores have been celebrating Independent Bookstore Day since the early years. "Independent Bookstore Day is a chance to spotlight all the neighborhood bookstores in the region as several have opened in the last few years," says Suzanne DeGaetano, owner of Mac's Backs, which is now in its 46th year. "Watching participation in Independent Bookstore Day blossom over the past decade is like the gratification of eating a plum off a tree that you planted," says Harriett Logan, whose own store, Loganberry Books, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Black Cat Books in Medina is celebrating their first Indie Bookstore Day in 2024, and owner Alicia Frazier is excited to join "with a lineup of other great area bookstores that we’ve frequented and admired throughout the years." Elizabeth's Bookshop manager Carrie George hopes the punchcard will "encourage folks to venture to Akron for a highly curated collection of books by QTBIPOC and disabled authors."
Each bookstore has unique plans to welcome customers to celebrate in their stores on Saturday April 27th - from giveaways, free gifts with every purchase, and even cake - customers should be sure to check with individual stores about their own unique plans. By making the punchcards available in bookstores only on IBD 2024, NEOH bookstores hope to encourage loyal community members to visit their favorite local spot for special celebrations on April 27th AND to discover great new bookstores in the region this spring.
