Lamont Jones, author of The Gist of Bid Whist: The Culturally Rich Card Game from Black America, joins Stanford Professor Dr. Adam Banks for a one-of-a-kind event in celebration of his new book and to introduce the history--and practical joys!--of Bid Whist.

At this special event, attendees will get a fascinating introduction to the history and secrets behind the game, followed by a crash course in how to play. Participants will then have the chance to play a hand with Lamont and Adam's expert guidance--or to show off their own expertise! UnBAR's delicious signature drinks and refreshments will be available for purchase.

The Gist of Bid Whist is a vibrant mix of strategy, stories, and cultural insights where Lamont Jones seamlessly weaves together the excitement of gameplay with the historical and cultural significance of Bid Whist within Black communities, from its roots with Pullman porters to its latest renaissance in Chicago during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lamont Jones serves as General Counsel for Haymon Boxing Management and is a former Olympic movement executive. He is a graduate of Columbia Law School and the University of Oklahoma. He's always enjoyed playing cards with a diverse range of people, starting in his hometown in the “Little Dixie” section of Oklahoma, as well as on Ivy League campuses, in corporate law firm settings, and in the boxing business.

Dr. Adam Banks is Professor and Faculty Director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric and the Institute for Diversity in the Arts at Stanford University. Prior to arriving at Stanford he served on faculty at the University of Kentucky and the Syracuse University Writing Program. He is the author of Digital Griots and Rhetoric and Technology, and he is currently working on a book titled Black Intranets: Dimensions of African American Digital Rhetoric.
