"A serial killer story with a queer twist. We get to see inside the heads of a female serial killer, her newest victim--non-conforming 18-year-old Kaz, and Sk'doo, an unidentifiable entity that lives within a cemetery. This is both a moving story of identity and expression, as well as a shocking, edge-of-your-seat thriller." | Elisabeth recommends Go Tell It: How James Baldwin Became a Writer by Quartez Harris. "I've been so excited about local poet and luminary Quartez Harris' picture book debut for months and now you can finally preorder it! This beautiful picture book introduces children to author James Baldwin in honor of his centenary, and boasts luscious illustrations by Caldecott Honoree Gordon C. James. We'll be sure to have Quartez sign copies--this isn't one to miss! Publishes January 7, 2025." | Eric recommends The Super Ladies by Susan Petrone. "A rollicking tale of three middle-aged suburban Cleveland women with seemingly conventional but often frustrating lives. A sudden event gives all three superpowers that turn their worlds upside-down. Fun, fast-moving, and gender-busting superhero adventures ensue. Petrone runs a wild, entertaining ride while taking a thoughtful look at the passages of women's lives." | Harriett recommends Empire Builders: An Illustrated History of the Rise and Fall of Cleveland's Van Swerigan Brothers by Lauren R. Pacini. "Shaker Heights needs a comprehensive history book, but this book goes a step further, because it puts the suburb's history in clear relation with the City of Cleveland's history, and the brothers who envisioned it, built it, and then watched it crash. Putting the Van Swerigan brothers at the heart of this history gives a human aspect to an empire that included Public Square, Shaker Square, Shaker Heights, the RTA, Nickel Plate RR and more. Buy this book for the crystal-clear B&W modern photographs and read it like an adventure novel, or put it on the coffee table and get sucked into the details of our illustrious past." | Toni recommends Not the Israel My Parents Promised Me by Harvey Pekar. "Cleveland's greatest observer of everyday life (mostly via American Splendor) delivered a final posthumous volume that is a personal, emotional, intellectual grappling with Jewish identity and what to make of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Like having a deep conversation with a smart, self-effacing, and charmingly cantankerous friend." | Wendy recommends A Stranger in the Citadel by Tobias Buckell. "In a society where books and reading are forbidden, and librarians are sentenced to death, the young daughter of the ruler must reconcile her obedience and her curiosity when she is confronted with a book-toting stranger. Fast-paced and compelling, this book would be appropriate for both teens and young adults who love a good dystopian novel." | Coming next month: For September: Narrative Nonfiction | Thanks for reading, Harriett & all the Loganberries | Open Mon-Wed, Fri-Sat: 10AM-6PM, Thurs: 10AM-8:30PM, Sun 12-5PM | | | | |
