Last year in April, the moon eclipsed the sun, and dear Otis died.&= nbsp;
For Poetry month, we wrote poems on coasters,
and we hoped to spread the love of lit to folks who don't take poetry se= riously. (good geeks we are)
This year, we collect books for Writ= ers in Residence,
try to keep our wits as democracy flounders,
try to find meaning in print, in people, or in the poetry on coaste= rs.
We'll announce winning bookmarks!
We'll use r= ecycled bags observing Earth Day -- reused, I mean, reused --  And we'= ll read more and read more and read more.
I miss Otis. Spri= ng soon.

Worthy of the Event is an electric, surprising, and revelatory use of the memoiristic ess= ay form. Vivian Blaxell's passion for Life lifts off every page: by which I= mean Life Itself, not just her own as a transwoman who survived and flouri= shed despite so many attempts to extinguish her. Becoming, far more than be= ing, is where Blaxell points, and I, for one, very much want to travel that= way with her.

Utterly original. The Eighth Moon = ;is a braided memoir about place, identity, illness, history, landscape, an= ti-capitalist movements of the 19th Century, and creating community. Kabat = writes with a keen eye, a confidently slippery sense of time, and deep comp= assion. I love this book. (And she has a new one coming out in May!) --= Toni

love the poems in So to Speak for their urgency and their (literal) subve= rsion. Hayes disassembles traditional forms from the sonnet to the sestina = and glues them back together with a new restless energy, leaving us with po= ems that are both political and profoundly personal. --Jen

In Modern Poetry, Pulitzer-winning Diane Seuss pays homage to the fi= rst book of poetry she read (later sold to a NYC used bookstore). Each meta= poem is technically exquisite, with recurring themes of her scrappy rural = Michigan childhood, trauma, love, and a railing against the collegiate lite= rary canon. Read these aloud, the cadence is superb. --Harriett
