Salutations!

For the third consecutive year, Loganberry Books helps celebrate World Vegetarian Month by teaming up with a local restaurant and by offering 10% off all cookbooks.  This year, we are pleased to introduce a brand-new cafe right across the street from us, specializing in Japanese and British cuisine.  Flying Cranes Cafe will have traditional British tea, sandwiches and take-out food, as well as Japanese specialties and dining in their charming new cafe.  In celebration of their opening, Loganberry Books will offer 10% coupons to Flying Cranes, and vice-versa, during the month of October.  They're not open quite yet, but word is they're aiming for October first!

In Concert
RachaneeRachanee
Thursday, October 4, 8pm
~ special event ~
Rachanee is a versatile independent singer/songwriter based in Michigan. Her catchy blend of folk/pop/rock music is quickly gaining attention nationwide at various venues and on college, Christian and AAA radio. "Here with Me" from Rachanee's debut album Ordinary Girl was named Best Contemporary Christian Song for the 2006 Independent Music Awards, and "From Here" placed second in the 2006 Great Lakes Songwriting Contest.  Often found as either a solo acoustic act or part of an acoustic duo, she is comfortable performing in any venue, as she performs regularly at festivals, coffeeshops, and churches all over the country.  Compared to Natalie Merchant and Michelle Branch, her music has a guitar-driven folk/rock feel; her heartfelt lyrics appeal to any audience.  Bonus: concert begins as Annex Gallery reception ends.  Tickets:  $10

Gene's Jazz HotGene's Jazz Hot
Thursday, October 11, 6:30pm-9:00pm

~ second Thursdays ~
We call Gene's Jazz Hot the house band here, but they were really regulars down the street at Cafe Limbo.  With the sudden loss of Cafe Limbo, Gene's Jazz Hot was feeling homeless, and that's just not right for the house band!  So, without further ado, we present Gene's Jazz Hot on the second Thursday of October and November, and see how it goes (subtext: come support the band and buy a book at intermission!).  Donations for the band gladly accepted.

Mitzie Verne:  The Emperor Was My Neighbor in Japan
Thursday, October 18, 7pm
~ third Thursdays ~
Mitzie Verne will discuss her family and its lifelong work in the world of books and art, beginning with the well-known Verne Gallery of Japanese Art.  Her brother Bob Levine was the founder of Cleveland’s well loved Publix Book Mart. Her daughter Betsy Franco has written more than 80 children’s books published by Scholastic, Simon & Schuster and Candlewick Press.  Her son Michael wrote Quiet Elegance: Japan Through the Eyes of Nine American Artists published by Tuttle.  And her grandson James Franco is an actor who won the Golden Globe Award for his role as James Dean and has had leading roles in the Spiderman films.  Mitzie herself has published a lovely little book titled The Emperor Was My Neighbor.  Come hear more about this illustrious Cleveland book family.  Sponsored by the Nothern Ohio Bibliophilic Society, $3 suggested donation.

Bloomsday Book Club
Thursday, October 4 & 25, 7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~

Tomorrow's Bloosmday Club meeting (Thursday, September 27) has been re-scheduled for October 4th for the convenience of the club members.  But we'll still meet on the fourth Thursday of October too, so put down October 4th and October 25th for James Joyce talks.  And keep on reading!

Stump the Bookseller  Selection of the month
Stump the BooksellerB586: Bluing for chickens
This is a chapter book from the 1950s or 60s, I believe part of a series or at least a sequel, about a large poor family living in the country/woods.  The oldest girl is a daughter and then there is a son, and lots of younger brothers and sisters.  There are stories of how they make do (passing down schoolbooks to be used from one year to the next, making a baseball out of string, etc.)  There is also a large bit about the little girls who go around the country neighborhood selling bluing they ordered from a magazine, to raise money to buy chickens (I think).  It is sort of reminiscent of Little House books only the family is larger and stuff.

Happy Halloween.  Come check out our spooky decor, and don't forget the blog....

boo,
Harriett
