Salutations!
We've been in our new digs here for
five years now, and we're just beginning to feel the growing pains
every bookseller feels when the shelf extenders cease to do their magic
to make one more book fit on a shelf. So now that we're entering the
dog-days of August we
decided to offer a special
month-long 20% off sale on all fiction! That's right,
come in anytime in August and chop 20% off general fiction prices (most
are already 50% off current retail price, so it's a great deal!). AND,
to make it even better, Shaker Heights has decapitated the parking
meters on the Shaker side of Larchmere, so parking in front of
Loganberry is currently free! (Can't tell you what new
heads these meters might grow, but take advantage of the freebie while
you can.)

Limited Editions Club
Thursday, August 21, 7pm
~ third Thursdays ~
The Limited Editions Club commissioned famous
artists to illustrate old classics, and then printed them beautifully
on top-quality
paper and bound them in gorgeously in slipcases. All were numbered and
signed by the illustrator (sometimes by the book designer), and
available only by subscription. Begun in 1929, the club soon earned a
devoted following, and has since become quite desirable amongst
collectors. But they're all different, and there is a range of quality
and rarity in the LEC history. Presentation by Jack Belcher, longtime
NOBS member and LEC collector. $3
suggested donation.
Stump
the Bookseller Selection of the month

D296: Dragon's wife is sick, needs monkey heart
The only story I recall from a collection late 1970s or
earlier--the dragon's wife is sick and needs a monkey heart to eat,
drama ensues. Detailed pen & ink illustration of dragon, monkey,
& tree. Dragon looked so sad. Looking for title of collection or
author. Hardbound, 8.5x11ish, maybe 150 pages.
Bloomsday Club
Thursday, August 28,
7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
The Bloomsday Club tackles Chapter 13 of James Joyce's Ulysses.
Novices and veterans alike are welcome --
it's a small informal group. We've been going at Ulysses in a
slow methodical way for a year and a half now, and we're about half-way
through! Some members of the group claim they'll finish this book if
it kills them, others aren't sure if it won't just kill them, but the
company is good, and we're sure there's a prize at the end. There is a
prize, isn't there?
Austeniana Club
Thursday, August 28, 7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
Jane Austen sequels and spin-offs abound in
recent years, but the earliest one we've found was published in 1913, a
good hundred years after Austen's death. Old Friends and New
Fancies by Sybil
G. Brinton also distinguishes itself by not being a mere sequel to
just one of Austen's novels, but a conglomerative extension of all six,
where the characters interact, snub, and of course marry across novel
boundaries. What a treat! Hmm... Georgiana Darcy and William Price
or Tom Bertram, perhaps? I'm not telling. Books are available now at
Loganberry; there's time enough to read it before the meeting on August
28th.
Larchmere Sidewalk Sale
First, I want to
share a
comment from the Local Author Book Fair that we held during the
Larchmere Flea Market & Festival on June 28th. Carolyn
Nilson is an author of training manuals (Team Games for Trainers, The Trainer's
Handbook), most published by mainstream presses like
McGraw-Hill. They’re professional textbooks really, and I warned
her there might not be a huge demand for these expensive books at the
Flea Market. However, she had a blast! Her letter sums it up best:
“It was fun interacting with such an
interesting cross-section of area folks, and although I sold no books,
I did meet a fan! who said he
has 3 of my books and uses them in his engineering consulting
work. I also met a guy who offered me a job—in Columbus!” The spirit
expressed here sums up the Festival perfectly for me. And she’s been
back to the shop twice
since the festival, with friends in tow. What fun to see these
connections being made! Thanks for sharing the good news. Oh, and
mark your calendar for the Larchmere Sidewalk Sale on Saturday,
August
30th! Loganberry Books offers a store-wide 20% off sale
during Sidewalk Sales . . . it only happens twice a year.
peace,
Harriett
