Salutations!
Fall is upon us, and the Annex Gallery pays homage to trees. Halloween
displays are in the window (at least until Otis says otherwise), and
we're in the midst of Banned Books Week. Join us for a film about two
independent bookstores, our anniversary party for Gene's Jazz Hot,
numerous book clubs, and otherwise happy browsing for books at
Loganberry! Happy Fall!

Diane Schwartz:
The Sycamores of Wicklow Road and Other
Natural Wonders
Thursday, October 2, 6-8pm
~ first Thursdays ~
Shaker Heights native Diane Schwartz has travelled the world . . . and
photographed the local trees. Three distinctive trees come into
special focus in this exhibit: the stately ancient olive groves of
Egnatza, Italy, the wind-pruned live oaks of Okracoke Island, North
Carolina, and the haunting beauty of Shaker Heights' sycamores. Both
framed and
matted photos will be available for sale, and plenty of stories of
travels and views from Diane. Refreshments and a musical treat will be
served. Visit the show anytime from October
2-November 3, opening reception is Thursday October 2, 6-8pm.
Gene's
Jazz Hot

October 9, 7pm-9pm
~ second Thursdays ~
October marks one year of Gene's Jazz Hot performing at Loganberry on
second Thursdays! Come help us celebrate this milestone, and keep us
all grooving along. Your soul needs a night off, and the sweet
anniversary snacks and drinks will be provided! Donations
for the band

the Cleveland Circle
Wednesday,
October 15, 7pm
The
Cleveland Circle book group is one of oldest and most active local book
clubs. While their members may come and go, the club has been steadily
growing and usually attracts 35+ women per session. At this special
meeting, other readers are invited to join in the conversation. The
book will be Barack Obama's Dreams
from
my Father. Originally published in 1995 after Obama was elected the first African-American president of the Harvard
Law Review, the book was re-released in 2004 following Senator Obama's
keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and has
become a national best-seller since his presidential campaign. The
autobiography follows Barack's coming-of-age and early career, his
personal experiences with race relations, and his search for his
father's family. It has been reviewed by
Time as perhaps "the best-written memoir ever produced by an
American politician."

Advance Film Screening: Paperback
Dreams
Thursday, October 16, 7pm
~ third Thursdays ~
Come watch Paperback
Dreams, a
short documentary film featuring the business lives of two renowned
independent bookstores: Cody's Books and Kepler's Books (both in
the California bay area). The film is scheduled to air on PBS sometime
in
November. However, it really is a conversation starter, so come see it
with friends and bibliophiles. What better place to see a
documentary about bookstores than in a bookstore? Cody's and Kepler's
are both legendary, and while their legacies may be unique,
their recent struggles are not. Cody's has closed since the making of
this film, but Kepler's lives on. $3
suggested donation.
Bloomsday & Austeniana Clubs

Thursday, October 23, 7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
The Bloomsday Club valiantly progresses with
Chapter 13 of James Joyce's Ulysses. Those who are old
pros at Ulysses should of course join us!
Continuing with the Jane Austen sequels, the Austeniana club reads Presumption
by Julia
Barrett, Newcomers welcome
anytime.

the Bookseller Selection of the month

M537: Mute Girl with Boy on Quest
All I know is the ending. They finally end up on the other side of
a mountain and the girl is able to speak after having been mute for the
entire book. May have had a horse along. Read in early 90s, thought it
was Lloyd Alexander, but doesn't match any of his. Probably fantasy.
Hint of romance.
peace,
Harriett
P.S. As I was preparing to send this newsletter today, a woman
walked into the bookstore holding a tiny cat proclaiming "you have to
help me." She said she found the kitten in a paper bag thrown outside
the bank, and that she had saved it from seeking refuge in the wheel
well of a car. I'm guessing that this orange tabby foundling is about
4 weeks old and female, and obviously in need food, shelter, and love.
Just because I adopted a stray kitten a couple months ago doen't mean I
need another, so I seek your help. Otis attracted many interested
takers, so here's the test: can any of you adopt a sweet little bundle
of orange fuzz? She needs a home. Thanks.
