Salutations!

octavofest.jpgWelcome October and Octavofest!  Some celebration that has something to do with a four-letter word beginning with B, right?  Well, yes, but it’s not about beer, it’s about books!  Octavo is the word used to describe the size and folding of the page for a typical novel, and thus Octavofest became the catch-word for this literary celebration.  Begun by a small book arts club in Cleveland (ABC), the event is now sponsored by Cleveland Public Library’s Center for the Book, and has dozens of sponsors and participating organizations.  All of our October events are part of Octavofest, but that’s only a small part of the overall festival.  Check out their website for more details and a calendar of events.

Stump the Bookseller  Selection of the month

Description: stump.jpgW343: Wizard with cat kidnaps girl

Unfortunately I don't remember much: It was a picture book from the late 70s/early 80s, the colours were rather dark & intense (no pastel colours). Plot: A wizard/sorcerer kidnaps a girl (princess?) and carries her away in a big bag/sack. He brings her to his dark tower, where his cat lived. Thanks!

Storytellers, Dreamers, and Travelers: An Artbooks Cleveland Invitational Exhibition

Opening Reception: Thursday, October 6, 6-8pm
~ first Thursdays ~

Focusing on content and structure, the book and paper artists represented in this exhibition showcase a broad range of materials and ideas. While some of the artists employ traditional techniques, others create a way to challenge the very notion of what is a book. Look to be intrigued and inspired by the creations of these extremely talented artists and members of Art Books Cleveland.  This exhibition is part of Octavofest, a month-long celebration of books and book arts (visit their website for the full calendar).  Show continues through October 31.

simon-reed.jpgSimon & Simon

Thursday, October 13, 7-9 PM

~ second Thursdays ~
Replacing Gene’s Jazz Hot this month are Reed Simon and his father Bill Simon.  Reed is a jazz violinist who plays with many bands around town.  Bill, age 95, is a pianist who has played with many famous musicians.  Their CD, A Storm Along the Mississippi, was recorded  with Marty Block on bass at Suma Recording Studios in 2010.  This special performance puts father and son together again for an acoustic concert of old favorites and stories of the legends.  Don’t miss it.  Donations for the band gratefully accepted.

Loganberry Books proudly announces our first annual holiday bazaar, Otis’ Old Curiosity Shop. clevelandreview.jpgKatheryn Norris: The Cleveland Review and Rust Belt Literature

Thursday, October 20, 7 pm

~ third Thursdays ~

Once the heartland of American industry, the Rust Belt has long flailed in the economic mire that the rest of the country is just now sinking into. Founded in 2010, The Cleveland Review is an online literary journal that focuses on the literature and culture of the Rust Belt. Managing editor Katheryn Norris will be here to discuss how the economic downturn of America could act as a catalyst for the emergence of Rust Belt fiction as a genre, as well as the process of starting a literary magazine from scratch.

Mural Dedication

Larchmere Mural, An Homage to Books and Community

Tentatively: Tuesday, October 25, 5pm

Please join us as we dedicate our new Larchmere mural that celebrates books and literacy.  This streetscape project is the next phase of public art on Larchmere Boulevard, which just-so-happens to be on the east wall of Loganberry Books.  Through a community recommendation process, a title list was compiled, and the artist, Gene Epstein, painstakingly photographed each one for enlargement and printing.  Come see our diverse community, as represented on the bookshelf!  The Dedication Ceremony date is still tentative, please check our website for updates. Or you can come by and see the work in progress!

Classics Club
classics-wilde.jpgOscar Wilde: The Picture of Dorian Gray

Thursday, October 27, 2011, 7:30 (Please note time change)

~ fourth Thursdays ~

Oscar Wilde's story of a fashionable young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty is one of his most popular works. Written in Wilde's characteristically dazzling manner, full of stinging epigrams and shrewd observations, the tale of Dorian Gray's moral disintegration caused something of a scandal when it first appeared in 1890. Wilde was attacked for his decadence and corrupting influence, and a few years later the book and the aesthetic/moral dilemma it presented became issues in the trials occasioned by Wilde's homosexual liaisons, trials that resulted in his imprisonment. Of the book's value as autobiography, Wilde noted in a letter, “Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry what the world thinks me: Dorian what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps.”

Congratulations!

Name-that-Author-winner-2011-s.jpgCongratulations to Debra Singer, winner of our Name That Author Contest!  She took home a dozen books as her prize.  Honorable Mentions go to Dave Holmes & Pat Jones.  We promise to make the contest easier next year, but boy, wasn’t it fun to try and guess??  Thanks to everyone who participated, we had a blast putting it all together.

Hope to see you soon!

peace,

Harriett
