Stump the Bookseller  Selection of the month

Description: stump.jpgY97: Young blond woman and young man

The book was for 9 -14 yr. old girls in the early sixties, possibly written earlier.  A young woman and young man, Irish I believe, were facing each other, holding hands.   The girl was blonde, hair partially tied back.  Wearing high collared white blouse with long sleeves. Possibly also a movie.

Altered Book Group:  Identity
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 5, 6-8pm

For each of these past 5 years, the Altered Book Group has chosen a theme. This year’s theme is Identity. Finally, the relationships within each artist’s family contributes to each sense of identity.  A great variety of altered books by artists Cynthia Beeker, Phyllis Brody, Sarah Clague, Gene Epstein, Anne Weissman, and Zena Zipporah.  Show continues through April 28.

Ninth Annual Books 2 Eat

Edible Books Festival

Saturday, April 7, 1pm

~ annual event ~

The Edible Books Festival is a creative contest with only one rule: make edible art that has something to do with books.  How people interpret this single rule is wherein lies the fun.  There are four official awards (won by popular vote and awarded appropriate books): the Logan Award for Most Literary, the Strong Award for Most Book-like, the Otis Award for Most Appetizing, and the Zober Award for Most Creative.  As always, the festivities are free, but for the additional pleasure of voting for and eating the edible book creations, a $3 fee helps keep the festival going.  Bring your friends, family, and kids.  Please register your entries, help spread the word (pdf flyer), and visit our website for a complete catalog of past events to get your imagination going.

Book Signing
The Art of Arabella Proffer: The National Portrait Gallery of Kessa
Wednesday, April 11, 7 pm

~ special event ~

Taking inspiration from artists of the Renaissance to Rococo periods, contemporary artist Arabella Proffer has re-imagined the mannerist portrait with a pop surrealist twist. After researching fashion history, heraldry, and peerage protocol, she went on to create her own world parallel to that of old world Europe. Concocting a family legacy -- ancestors that could belong to anyone – it has become an impulse and a passion the artist continues to explore, adding characters and stories to her ever-growing private empire of punks, goths, and nobility behaving badly. Proffer will sign copies of her book, which is published locally by Cooperative Press. Included are over 40 portraits created between 2000 and 2011, their stories, family trees, map and more, as well as a foreword by Josh Geiser of Creep Machine and Paper Devil.

Book Launch and Author Reading
Loung Ung: Lulu in the Sky
Wednesday, April 18, 7pm

~ special event ~
Join us on April 18th at 7 PM for the official launch of Loung Ung’s newest memoir, LuLu in the Sky.  Writer, activist and a survivor of the Cambodia killing fields, Loung has already fascinated us with First They Killed My Father and Lucky Child. Now she has written a heart-wrenching and inspiring story about her “struggle to keep darkness and depression at bay while she attends college and falls in love with Mark, a Midwestern archetype of American optimism.  Lulu is a story of Loung’s tentative steps into love, activism, and marriage—a journey that takes her back to Cambodia to reconnect with her mother’s spirit and to a vocation that focused on healing the landscape of her birth.”  Preorders of Lulu in the Sky will be offered at 10% off, reserve a copy today via our Generic Order Form or E-mail.

Wendy Wasman: The Art & Science of Exploration
Thursday, April 19, 7pm
~ third Thursdays ~
Wendy Wasman, librarian at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will present a visual lecture on The Art of Science & Exploration: an Illustrated Journey through (Mostly) 19th-Century (Mostly) Ornithological Books. This survey of some of the most important illustrators of scientific works, such as Joseph Wolf, Edward Lear, and John Gould, clearly demonstrates the intersection of science and art.

Book Signing
Erin O'Brien: The Irish Hungarian Guide to the Domestic Arts
Wednesday, April 25, 7pm
~ special event ~
The Irish Hungarian Guide to the Domestic Arts proves that the Rust Belt is the perfect backdrop for a whirlwind romance, that shopping at the discount grocery is really performance art, and that a half-acre lot in the middle of America is all you need to accommodate a field of dreams. This book is also a food memoir for the rest of us, wherein a dozen ears of sweet corn turn a humble bowl of chowder into a divine creation, the Hamburger Helper glove dukes it out with a scrappy bowl of slumgullion, and banishing the blues is as easy as lunch with Holly Golightly at the local farmers' market. A misfit Irish-but-not-Catholic girl from Cleveland's west side, O'Brien is funny and sophisticated, projecting triumph through the lens of the domicile without blinking when sorrow fills the screen. The right measure of quirk and earthy sex separate this book from the Erma Bombeck set, while O'Brien's dry Midwest humor ties it all together.

Classics Club
Dorothy Allison: Bastard Out Of Carolina
Thursday, April 26, 7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
Greenville County, South Carolina, a wild, lush place, is home to the Boatwright family—rough-hewn men who drink hard and shoot up each other's trucks, and indomitable women who marry young and age all too quickly. At the heart of this astonishing novel is Ruth Anne Boatwright, known simply as Bone, a South Carolina bastard with an annotated birth certificate to tell the tale. Observing everything with the mercilessly keen eye of a child, Bone finds herself caught in a family triangle that will test the loyalty of her mother, Anney. Her stepfather, Daddy Glen, calls Bone "cold as death, mean as a snake, and twice as twisty," yet Anney needs Glen. At first gentle with Bone, Daddy Glen becomes steadily colder and more furious—until their final, harrowing encounter, from which there can be no turning back.

Hope to see you soon!

peace,

Harriett
