Salutations,

Happy Women’s Month!  We have women in the Annex Gallery, women for book signings, and a fundraiser in honor of March.  And about those book signings-- they’re pretty exciting this month.  I have props from Tombstone, Arizona to help celebrate one book signing, one author is a former Loganberry staff member, and one is debut novelist.  Won’t you come celebrate with us? And Otis?

Mitzi Faye: Fantasy Landscapes & Other Imaginations
Wednesday, March 4, 2015, 6:00PM
~ first Wednesdays ~
Collage is a form used by many artists at some time in their creative investigations. These alternative realities have no preconceived themes. I do not start with an idea or create them with some final image in mind. I use only the materials at hand: magazines, catalogues, advertisements that come in the mail. I tear and cut at random, and the relationships between the glossy bits of paper seem to develop naturally, intuitively. The compositions emerge almost on their own, surfacing from some unknown, unexplored, untapped place in me. It is as if they just happen, without my help or interference. I have never worked like this before and I have found it very liberating.

Ferrett Steinmetz: Flex
Friday, March 6, 2015, 7:00PM
~ special event ~
A desperate father will do anything to heal his daughter in a novel where “Breaking Bad” meets Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files. FLEX: Distilled magic in crystal form. The most dangerous drug in the world. Snort it, and you can create incredible coincidences to live the life of your dreams. FLUX: The backlash from snorting Flex. The universe hates magic and tries to rebalance the odds; maybe you survive the horrendous accidents the Flex inflicts, maybe you don’t. PAUL TSABO: The obsessed bureaucromancer who’s turned paperwork into a magical Beast that can rewrite rental agreements, conjure rented cars from nowhere, track down anyone who’s ever filled out a form. But when all of his formulaic magic can’t save his burned daughter, Paul must enter the dangerous world of Flex dealers to heal her. Except he’s never done this before – and the punishment for brewing Flex is army conscription and a total brain-wipe.

Carl Weitman: The Caldecott Award & Age of the American Picture Book
Wednesday, March 18, 2015, 7:00PM
~ third Wednesdays ~
The year 2013 marked the 75th Anniversary of the American Library Association’s Caldecott Award for the year’s best picture book. The Caldecott Award has become the best known award in the world for the illustration of children’s books. Winning the Caldecott practically guarantees that recipients will remain forever in print and will be more collectible. Of course, there are other factors to most well loved picture books, including that they are more likely to have been lovingly abused by their owners. Cleveland collector and member of NOBS, FABS and the Rowfant Club, Carl Weitman will discuss a little of the history of the Caldecott Awards, what defines a picture book as “for children” and several winners past & present.

Book Signing

Mary Doria Russell: Epitaph
Thursday, March 19, 2015, 7:00PM
~ Cleveland book launch ~
Mary Doria Russell, the bestselling, award-winning author of The Sparrow, brings us Epitaph—an American Iliad of the Wild old West.  This richly detailed and meticulously researched historical novel continues the story she began in Doc, following Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday to Tombstone, Arizona, and to the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. A whirlwind of forces came to bear on the afternoon of October 26, 1881, when Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers faced off against the Clantons and the McLaurys in Tombstone, Arizona. It should have been a simple misdemeanor arrest. Thirty seconds and thirty bullets later, three officers were wounded and three citizens lay dead in the dirt. Wyatt Earp was the last man standing, the only one unscathed. The lies began before the smoke cleared, but the gunfight at the O.K. Corral would soon become central to American beliefs about the Old West. Epitaph tells Wyatt’s real story, unearthing the Homeric tragedy buried under 130 years of mythology, misrepresentation, and sheer indifference to fact. Epic and intimate, this novel gives voice to the real men and women whose lives were changed forever by those fatal 30 seconds in Tombstone. At its heart is the woman behind the myth: Josephine Sarah Marcus, who loved Wyatt Earp for forty-nine years and who carefully chipped away at the truth until she had crafted the heroic legend that would become the epitaph her husband deserved.

Susan Petrone: Throw Like a Woman
Tuesday, March 24, 2015, 7:00PM
~ book launch ~
Forty years old, divorced, with two sons on the verge of adolescence and an ex-husband who considers visitation to be optional, Brenda Haversham isn't having a whole lot of fun. She's also no longer qualified for the work she loves, so she's working in a cubicle instead while trying to make ends meet. Brenda is short on money, short on connection with her kids, and short on any kind of social life. The only thing Brenda has in abundance is her anger. And that turns out to be her greatest asset. When she was a kid, Brenda's father taught her how to throw a good fastball. That wasn't of much use to a girl, but it is enough to astound onlookers at a "test your speed" pitching cage before a Cleveland Indians game. The more Brenda pictures her ex-husband's face on the other end, the harder she throws. And when someone tapes her performance and puts it up online, Brenda becomes an Internet sensation – and then more than that. Soon, the Indians come calling and Brenda finds her life taking a turn in a new direction. She finds herself standing on the mound as the first woman player in Major League history – and dealing with everything that comes with it.

Sherman Alexie: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
Wednesday, March 25, 2015, 7:00PM
~ fourth Wednesdays ~
Bestselling author Sherman Alexie tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot. Heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is based on the author's own experiences, coupled with poignant drawings by Ellen Forney that reflect the character's art, chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he was destined to live. Loganberry's own book discussion group, led by Susan Petrone (yeah, the one who has the book signing listed above).

For the last 200 years, seventeen-year-old Dreamcatcher Daniel has protected the living from Nightmares—clawed, red-eyed creatures that feed off people's fears while they sleep.
