Salutations!

We had so much fun with Independent Bookstore Day this year (our second year, but the first to feature a 9-store Cleveland area Passport). Thanks to everyone who participated, and I hope you discovered some new bookstores and picked up some treasures. We’ll do it again next year.

Lots of great events lined up this month, including our first Sidewalk Sale of the season, but please take note of Dave Hill’s visit on May 13. Dave’s humor is infectious, and he’ll remind us of his Cleveland roots as he reminisces and keeps us laughing.

What’s On Sale

Each month, we’ve been featuring a section for a special sale. May may bring us flowers, but it also brings us joy in learning about new lives, and so we’re having a sale on Biographies. Any biography counts for this 20% feature, but you’ll find them throughout our store, not just on the Biography/Memoir shelves. For instance, check out Artist Monographs, Presidents, Science, Middle Grade, and of course, Literature. They all count. Read about someone new this month.

Dave Hill is a comedian, writer, and musician originally from Cleveland but now living in New York City. He has written for The New York Times, The Paris Review, Salon, GQ, McSweeney’s, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, the New York Daily News, and Guitar World, among other publications. He is a regular contributor to public radio’s This American Life and hosts his own radio show, The Goddamn Dave Hill Show, on WFMU in Jersey City, New Jersey. Dave has starred in his own TV series, The King of Miami, on the MOJO Network. He has also appeared on Comedy Central, BBC America, MTV, and Adult Swim, among others, and is a regular host on HBO and Cinemax. Dave performs live comedy in theaters and basements all over the world. He also plays guitar and sings in his own rock band, Valley Lodge, whose song “Go” is the theme song for HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Dave Hill Doesn’t Live Here Anymore is his second collection of nonfiction essays. Tasteful Nudes:…and Other Misguided Attempts at Personal Growth and Validation is his first.

Old Time Radio Night

Episode 1: "The Six Shooter" was a folksy Western adventure series which starred Jimmy Stewart as Britt Ponset, a frontier drifter, gentleman, and gunfighter with a gun of “gray steel and rainbow mother-of-pearl.” They call both the man and the gun The Six Shooter.
Episode 2: "The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." From 1939 to 1945, in 220 Episodes, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce made radio shows just as exciting as their movies on television every Monday Night, and cemented their versions of these famous characters in the minds of America.
Episode 3: "Fibber McGee and Molly." Few radio shows were more beloved than "Fibber McGee and Molly." The program's lovable characters included Mayor LaTrivia, Doc Gamble, Mrs. Uppington, Wallace Wimple, Alice Darling, Gildersleeve, Beulah, Myrt, and the Old Timer. Molly's warning to Fibber not to open the hall closet door (and his subsequent decision to do it) created one of radio's best remembered running gags that audiences expected each week.
