Salutations!

We had so much fun with Independent Bookstore Day this year (our second year, but the first to feature a 9-store Cleveland area Passport).  Thanks to everyone who participated, and I hope you discovered some new bookstores and picked up some treasures.  We’ll do it again next year.

Lots of great events lined up this month, including our first Sidewalk Sale of the season, but please take note of Dave Hill’s visit on May 13. Dave’s humor is infectious, and he’ll remind us of his Cleveland roots as he reminisces and keeps us laughing.

What’s On Sale

Each month, we’ve been featuring a section for a special sale.  May may bring us flowers, but it also brings us joy in learning about new lives, and so we’re having a sale on Biographies.  Any biography counts for this 20% feature, but you’ll find them throughout our store, not just on the Biography/Memoir shelves.  For instance, check out Artist Monographs, Presidents, Science, Middle Grade, and of course, Literature.  They all count.  Read about someone new this month.

Old Time Radio Night
Thursday, May 19, 2016, 7:00PM
~ third Thursdays ~
Episode 1: "The Six Shooter" was a folksy Western adventure series which starred Jimmy Stewart as Britt Ponset, a frontier drifter, gentleman, and gunfighter with a gun of “gray steel and rainbow mother-of-pearl.” They call both the man and the gun The Six Shooter.
Episode 2: "The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." From 1939 to 1945, in 220 Episodes, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce made radio shows just as exciting as their movies on television every Monday Night, and cemented their versions of these famous characters in the minds of America.
Episode 3: "Fibber McGee and Molly." Few radio shows were more beloved than "Fibber McGee and Molly." The program's lovable characters included Mayor LaTrivia, Doc Gamble, Mrs. Uppington, Wallace Wimple, Alice Darling, Gildersleeve, Beulah, Myrt, and the Old Timer. Molly's warning to Fibber not to open the hall closet door (and his subsequent decision to do it) created one of radio's best remembered running gags that audiences expected each week.

Raymie Nightingale
by Kate DiCamillo
Raymie Clarke has come to realize that everything, absolutely everything, depends on her. And she has a plan. If Raymie can win the Little Miss Central Florida Tire competition, then her father, who left town two days ago with a dental hygienist, will see Raymie's picture in the paper and (maybe) come home. To win, not only does Raymie have to do good deeds and learn how to twirl a baton; she also has to contend with the wispy, frequently fainting Louisiana Elefante, who has a show-business background, and the fiery, stubborn Beverly Tapinski, who’s determined to sabotage the contest. But as the competition approaches, loneliness, loss, and unanswerable questions draw the three girls into an unlikely friendship — and challenge each of them to come to the rescue in unexpected ways. Two-time Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo returns to her roots with a moving, masterful story of an unforgettable summer friendship.
Thunder Boy Jr. by Sherman Alexie
Thunder Boy Jr. is named after his dad, but he wants a name that's all his own. Just because people call his dad Big Thunder doesn't mean he wants to be Little Thunder. He wants a name that celebrates something cool he's done, like Touch the Clouds, Not Afraid of Ten Thousand Teeth, or Full of Wonder.
Are We There Yet? by Dan Santat
Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat takes readers on the road trip of a lifetime! "Are we there yet?" Every parent has heard this classic kid question on a long car ride--and after reading this astonishingly inventive new book (that even turns upside down for several pages!), you'll never look at being bored the same way again.

Susan Petrone: Throw Like a Woman
Wednesday, May 25, 2016, 7:00PM
~ fourth Wednesdays ~
Forty years old, divorced, with two sons on the verge of adolescence and an ex-husband who considers visitation to be optional, Brenda Haversham isn't having a whole lot of fun. She's also no longer qualified for the work she loves, so she's working in a cubicle instead while trying to make ends meet. Brenda is short on money, short on connection with her kids, and short on any kind of social life. The only thing Brenda has in abundance is her anger. And that turns out to be her greatest asset. When she was a kid, Brenda's father taught her how to throw a good fastball. That wasn't of much use to a girl, but it is enough to astound onlookers at a "test your speed" pitching cage before a Cleveland Indians game. The more Brenda pictures her ex-husband's face on the other end, the harder she throws. And when someone tapes her performance and puts it up online, Brenda becomes an Internet sensation – and then more than that. Soon, the Indians come calling and Brenda finds her life taking a turn in a new direction. She finds herself standing on the mound as the first woman player in Major League history – and dealing with everything that comes with it. The money is great and the endorsement deals are even better. The fury of "traditionalists," not so much. And the conflicting emotions of her teammates are even harder to manage. Meanwhile, Brenda's home life is evolving faster than she can keep up, redefining her role as a mother, a friend, and even a lover. As the season winds down Brenda will find out if she has what it takes to be a winner – at both baseball and life. A funny, poignant, and endearing debut from a writer of rare warmth and humanity. ** yes, it’s true, we’re reading moderator’s Susan Petrone’s novel this month.  Come for the discussion, with the author!
