Loganberry News February 2019

For the love of books

I (Harriett) recently returned from New Mexico, where I joined 700 other indie booksellers to hone our bookselling skills, network, learn about new books, and get energized about the good work that bookstores do in their communities (I call it drinking the Kool-Aid, and consider it an essential part of the job). Sure, it was fun to see Margaret Atwood in person, but I'm personally really excited about Hanif Abdurraqib and his poetic new book Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest (out tomorrow, 2/6!).

We also traded notes on Independent Bookstore Day (04/27) and special events (the next gem on Loganberry's calendar is Valentine's Night, 2/14). All over the country, indie bookstores are surging (96 new stores opened in 2018!), and we are delighted that you, our customers, are keeping these quirky, feisty stores alive. Who are you reading that excites you? There are a lot of books out there, and if we missed one, we'd love to learn from you!

Please join authors Jacqueline Acho and Eva Basilion, for a signing of their new book. Empathy Deficit Disorder provides hope for healing the nation-wide emotional and physical toxicity affecting our health and well-being. We are suffering from an empathy deficit disorder. The good news is there is a way out. Healing starts with reexamining our modern myths about how we work, what quality time at home really means, and why the age-old battle of the sexes persists.

Jackie Acho is President of The Acho Group, a strategy and leadership consulting firm. Prior to founding The Acho Group in 2005, she was a Partner of McKinsey & Company and received her master's degree and Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
