Antiquarian Acquisitions

We've recently added a wide selection of African American-interest books published in the first half of the 20th century. Many are collectible and hard to find; many were produced as part of The Associated Publishers' (a house based in Washington DC) mission to publish books for Black American readers by Black American writers. Many are listed now on our website, including, pictured here, The Voice of the Negro by Robert T. Kerlin, an anthology of writing by African American journalists and newspaper editors across America in the months leading up to the 1919 Chicago Riots which happened 100 years ago this summer.

Nancy Lick: Ellis Island Illustrated

Please join us for a reception to celebrate Nancy Lick's new Annex Gallery Show, Ellis Island Illustrated: The Great Wave of Immigration on view and for sale in the Loganberry Books Annex Gallery through September 2019. It's also our last art opening of 2019 so we hope you'll help us celebrate in style!

These paintings and drawings are inspired by the great wave of immigration that occurred the USA during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, with Ellis Island serving as the primary gateway to America. Using a unique combination of collage and paint, these visual interpretations of the scenes at Ellis Island capture the anticipation and hope of the immigrants in their search for new and better lives.

Nancy Lick works from her home studio in South Euclid. She holds a BFA in Studio Art from Kent State and an MA from Ursuline College and teaches drawing and design at a local colleges.

Amos started her Alzheimer’s journey when her mother started having memory problems. Carol has immersed herself in Alzheimer’s education by reading and attending conferences, workshops, and support groups. Great Lakes African American Writers Conference

The Great Lakes African American Writers Conference will host an Author Showcase at Loganberry Books on Saturday, September 21 from noon to 4 pm. The day includes a tribute to Toni Morrison, a talk from Anisfield-Wolf Fellow Zachary Thomas, and readings from northern Ohio’s best prose writers of color. Books from nearly 20 writers of color will be available for sale and signing by the author. GLAAWC is presented in partnership withn partnership with The Cleveland Foundation and Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards and Cleveland Book Week The event is free and open to all. Please also make plans to join us at the GLAAWC itself on Saturday, September 28 at the East Cleveland Public Library.

John Billheimer: Hitchcock and the Censors

In Hitchcock and the Censors, John Billheimer traces the development of movie censorship in the US and Britain and documents its impact on Alfred Hitchcock as he battled to push the boundaries of screen permissiveness. In this presentation, Billheimer uses film clips to illustrate Hitchcock’s priorities in creating suspense and sidestepping censorship to create a lifetime of memorable films.

Norman Graubart, proprietor of the Cleveland Book Company, is a book dealer based in Lakewood, operating out of his home and selling mostly online and at antiquarian book fairs. As the son of another antiquarian bookseller, he has been collecting books since his childhood, but sharpened his skills through the discipline of the trade. His talk will cover some of the basics of how to go about starting a book collection, how to identify a first edition, how to navigate the online marketplace, how best to maintain your books, and red flags to look for when you’re buying.

Written in celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the dedication of the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Honoring their Memory tells the story of the struggles and achievements experienced in the creation of the Monument, designed and constructed by Architect, Sculptor, and Civil War Veteran Levi T. Scofield to honor more than 9,000 from Cuyahoga County who served in the War of the Rebellion. Through Lauren Pacini's contemporary photography, the story is told in the context of the architect's life and his broader body of work.
