Black Future Month

Illuminating Black= Authors
Saturday, August 1-August 31, 2020

We've decided to answ= er the question author NK Jemisin rhetorically as= ks in the title of her story collection How Long Til Black Future Month? by declari= ng August as Black Future Month. We encourage everyone to find ways to ce= lebrate Black Future Month, exactly half a year from Black History Month:= a time to imagine and equip ourselves to work for a future that honors a= nd celebrates all Black lives and work. This year, we will participate in= a performance art shelving project called Illuminating Black Authors, ak= in to our Illustrating the Gender Gap project of = March 2017. In the LitArts room, we will push fiction books written by no= n-Black people to the back of the shelf, and highlight books written by B= lack* authors face-out in front.

Our objective is to highlight works written by= Black writers and to guide your reading discovery to voices from the Afr= ican diaspora and Africa (not just to showcase the disparity; we know it's enormous). Customers are welcome to join us in the project, as we re= search what we can and make the shelving shift on Saturday, August 1st. One hour of your time will earn you $10 in Loganberry book credit= ! The exhibition will remain in place through the month of August, and al= l books will of course be available for browsing and for sale.

*We're working w= ithin the knowledge that race (like gender) is a social construct with pr= ofoundly real affects on human lives. For the purposes of this project, w= e'll highlight the work of authors who self-define as Black or African/of= African descent.
