Harriett is reading My Monticello by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson "This power= ful short story collection sometimes takes a cynical twist but then redef= ines hope. Taking refuge in Jefferson=E2=80=99s famous home seems a fitti= ng rebuke to white supremacists, while conducting social experiments on o= ne=E2=80=99s own son is a horror story straight out of B. F. Skinner. Joh= nson=E2=80=99s characters may surprise you, but they always ring true."

Sarah is= recommending Fun Home by Alison Bechdel: "Year= s ago, this was the first book I ever read that was about being gay, and = it was the first Graphic Novel I ever read, too. Now I'm hooked on on Ali= son Bechdel's books because of her wit, honesty and dark humor."

Julie is reading: Small Town Pride by Phil Stamper: "A sweet read about a gay middle school boy's tribulations after hi= s father puts up a giant pride flag in front of their home, in a tiny (fi= ctional) town near Akron. He ultimately decides that what their somewhat = unenlightened town needs is a Pride parade, but the mayor is very opposed= , and very powerful. Meanwhile, he develops a crush on the mayor's son...= will he ever be able to be himself? Read and find out!"

Toni is reading The Essent= ial Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel : "An unde= rground classic, this comic strip documenting everyday lesbian life, love= , and politics in a midsize American city ran in indie newspapers from 19= 83-2008, and is one of my favorite literary works in any genre ever, desc= ribed by Bechdel herself as 'half op-ed column and half endless, serializ= ed Victorian novel.' Miranda is reading = A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow: I picke= d this up on the recommendation of a Broaden Your Bookshelf participant (= and Broaden Q1 best description winner) and LOVED it! Freddy is reading: How = the Word Is Passed by Clint Smith "This book brings the= history of slavery incredibly alive by revisiting historic sites, Montic= ello, Angola, etc, telling their stories and bringing us to where we are = today, making history present and real. Clint Smith is mainly known as a = poet, and this narrative book is beautifully written and very powerful."<= /p>
