It is as endless as the dawn. | Annex Gallery Joel Bartell: Oil paintings of Cleveland and Shaker Heights Landscapes July 1-31, 2022 Opening reception on Thursday, June 7, 6pm-8pm! ~first Thursdays~ Joel Bartell was born and raised in Cleveland and is a graduate of Cooper School of Art where he studied both sculpting and painting. Joel finds inspiration in the flora and fauna of Northeast Ohio; his latest works have been an expression of his deep appreciation for the spectacular trees in the area. His paintings often feature cropped subject matter in a style that draws inspiration from classic impressionism while incorporating the techniques of pointillism. Joel hopes to capture the beauty of the old, flowering and often twisted trees that line the streets of both Cleveland and Shaker Heights and impart feelings of familiarity and awe. | Local Voices Brooke Bobincheck: Blood Claws Rising: Tales of the Sanguine Empire Sunday, July 3, 2022, 1pm ~in-store~ It is the 24th century, and humanity has successfully breached beyond their limited solar system to colonize much of the known galaxy. With a past-present-future interspersed format, we follow 5 distinct storylines, with a surprising twist at the end, and a linking across the centuries that it as incredulous as it is simple. This month our booksellers are recommending some favorites from Small Presses Purchase any book below by clicking on its title! | Harriett is recommending How to Resist Amazon & Why by Danny Caine How to Resist Amazon & Why is published by Microcosm. "Sure, you probably know about the competition that Amazon poses to independent booksellers, and the unlevel playing field in which it dominates. But it's the trickling effects to our local economy (taxes, jobs, streetscape, other local businesses and charities) and the change to the publishing climate itself (narrowing of B-level and debut authors deals, literally controlling what gets published) that resonate. The big picture is bigger than you might expect, and it's neatly and concisely explained in this little book. The expanded edition of this zine is published by Microcosm, which is a small press that does not distribute through Amazon. Both Microcosm and author Danny Caine have connections to Cleveland." | Elisabeth is reading On Lighthouses by Jazmina Barrera: On Lighthouses is published by Two Lines Press "This charming little book is the perfect size to tuck into your beach bag! It's a wonderful meander through the human history of lighthouses and the author's own travels. If you love Rebecca Solnit and Maggie Nelson, this gem of a book is for you." | Freddy is recommending: Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry: All of Wendell's writings are published by Counterpoint Press, a press known for its quality of literary and cutting edge writers. "Hannah Coulter is the first of four books about his fictionalized town of Port William and follows the same families who have lived there and farmed the land forever." | Good to know: ▪ Open Mon-Wed & Fri-Sat:10-6, Thurs: 10am-8:30, Sun 12-5 ▪ Masks required ▪ It's so nice to see you, thanks for stopping by! ▪ | Open Mon-Wed & Fri-Sat:10-6, Thurs: 10am-8:30, Sun 12-5 | ▪ | It's so nice to see you, thanks for stopping by! | | Thanks for reading, Harriett & all the Loganberries | | | | |
