This month's bookseller host: Miesha
Thursday, October 20, 7:30pm
~3rd Thursdays, in-store and virtual~
This month, former Loganberry Bookseller Miesha will be discussing When We Cease to Understand the World by Benjamin Labatut!

Albert Einstein opens a letter sent to him from the Eastern Front of World War. The great mathematician Alexander Grothendieck tunnels so deeply into abstraction that he tries to cut all ties with the world, terrified of the horror his discoveries might cause. Erwin Schrödinger and Werner Heisenberg battle over the soul of physics after creating two equivalent yet opposed versions of quantum mechanics. Using extraordinary, epoch-defining moments from the history of science, Benjamín Labatut plunges us into exhilarating territory between fact and fiction, progress and destruction, genius and madness.

Collectible Books for Any Budget

Arkham House publishers was founded in 1939 by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei to publish hardcover editions of the works of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, whose stories had only previously been published in pulp magazines. The name Arkham is a nod to Lovecraft’s fictional New England town. In addition to the works of Lovecraft, Arkham House also published books by many of Lovecraft's contemporaries and followers, including Ray Bradbury, Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, William Hope Hodgson, Brian Lumley, and others.

We recently acquired a large collection of first edition Arkham House books, and you can peruse and purchase offerings in-store in the Sanctuary or via our online store.

We continue to expand and update our collectible editions listings online weekly--and our list of modern first editions is now fully listed online! You can also email wendy@logan.com for a personalized suggestion for any budget!

Read along with our booksellers!

9780062671134

Harriett recommends The Sentence by Louise Erdrich: "The best bookstore haunting since Christopher Morley! Yeah, sure, of course I like bookstore novels, but this one is specifically of our place and time, covering COVID, identity politics, George Floyd, and the bestsellers of 2020. And throughout one bookstore year, the ghost of pesky customer Flora lingers on. Don't tell me how it ends, I'm still reading!"

9781735286044

Wendy recommends Roseneath by Dana McSwain: "This classic gothic horror story from a local author is complete with an old house that is haunted by beings who are fighting an ancient battle between good and evil. A young couple is caught in the middle, and the horrors they endure are enough to keep readers wide-eyed and terrified all night"

9781982190941

Elisabeth recommends Briefly, a Delicious Life by Nell Stevens: "A ghost story unlike any I've ever read--it's more full of life and love for the sweet things in life than many a ghost-free story. George Sand! the Italian countryside! Centuries of sapphic love! Plus, it's got a praise blurb from Sarah Waters on the cover, so what more could you ask for?"

9780307947307

Sarah recommends The Stand by Stephen King "Stephen King is always scary, but my favorite of his novels, The Stand, haunts me to this day, after reading it some forty years ago-and rereading a few times since then. If you want a deep, dark scare, that will pull you in and not let you go, read this book."

9780143129547

Toni recommends We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson: "This 20th century classic is a deeply unsettling tale. It introduces an isolated, strange and possibly murderous family and tells what happens when a cousin comes to visit. It's been called an inverted fairy tale, and it is a must read for anyone interested in psychological horror, feminist literature, or discovering a great American writer!"

54860229

Brenda recommends The Mirror & the Light by Hilary Mantel: "Literary historical novels can be full of dread, scary even when you know how it will end. The third volume in the late Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall trilogy blends humor and intrigue as Thomas Cromwell climbs to the highest ranks before being betrayed by his own success. His beheading on orders from King Henry VIII left me in tears."

9780486440330

Devon recommends The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe: "This gothic romance is a long-standing favorite among horror fanatics. It is a tale of grief, love, psychological terror, and a once-glorious castle, set in Northern Italy and Southern France. Radcliffe’s prose is captivating, making you feel a part of the story."

9781419751974

Rachel recommends M Is for Monster by Talia Dutton: "Frances is determined to bring her sister Maura, killed six months ago in a tragic accident, back to the land of the living. Much like the original Dr. Frankenstein, Frances is dismayed by the result of her revival attempts; the person she brings back is not the Maura who her sister remembers. "M" has her own goals and desires, and bucks Frances' attempts to force her into a Maura-shaped mold. Much as Frankenstein was an allegory for science pushed beyond ethical borders, this contemporary YA graphic restyling addresses queerness, identity, family and grief. "

9781944322311

Elijah recommends The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen: "A turn-of-the-century masterpiece, the grandeur of which lies in the cosmic scope of its horror, which makes Lovecraft look quaint: the true monster is the fabric of reality itself."

9780062883391

Alice recommends: Escape Goat by Ann Patchett: A charming picture book about a goat who gets blamed for all the mishaps on the farm. Of course it's the human family making all those blunders and mistakes, but the goat doesn't seem to mind, and always finds a new way to escape his pen. Charmingly drawn by Robin Preiss Glasser of Fancy Nancy fame!
