<= strong style=3D"font-weight: bold;">Harriett recommends The Home= Place by J. Drew Lanham: "What a beautiful, tender nar= rative of a man in love with the world around him. Lanham describes his h= ome on the edge of the South Carolina piedmont with precision and an acui= ty for red dirt. But he also wonders about his Black heritage and his pas= sion for birds, and he invites us on his quest to discover more. A self-d= escribed Ivory-billed Woodpecker, I hope Lanham encourages others to foll= ow his trail, or to blaze their own."

Wendy recommen= ds Big Man and the Little Men by Clifford Thompson: "When celebrated African American essayist April Wells is assigned = to accompany presidential candidate William Waters on the campaign trail,= she finds herself caught in a tense situation, calling into question the= power and value of telling the truth. This excellent graphic novel is a = timely look at politics in our divided country."

Elisabeth recommends Lucy by Jamaica Kincai= d: "If you think you don't like "autofiction" (like I though= t), try Jamaica Kincaid. Lucy, one= of her heavily autobiographical novellas, brings the reader along the fi= recracker title character's first year of life as an immigrant from the C= aribbean--and as a servant in a wealthy White family's home. It's funny, = it's angry, it's joyful, it's bright and shining and fresh as it was when= it was published more than 30 years ago. A must-must read for all lovers= of Virginia Woolf."

Toni rec= ommends When They Tell You to be Good by Prince Shakur:= "Prince Shakur=E2=80=99s memoir of personal and political awake= ning traces his experience as a queer, Black, immigrant kid in Ohio in th= e 2000s through his journeys around the world and into a powerful, radica= l sense of self and commitment. As gorgeously written as it is stunningly= honest and intellectually provocative. As a bonus, all the copies we hav= e in the shop are signed by the author!"

Cat recommends Choosing Brave<= /em> by Angela Joy: "I recommend this picture book that prov= ides a poetic, beautiful depiction of how Mamie Till allowed for her trau= ma to provide momentum for the Civil Rights Movement. While the story of = Emmitt Till is a heartbreaking one, it is a story we should all know and = honor; this book shares the Tills's story in a manner suitable for young = readers. This book also won the Steptoe Illu= strator of the Year award from the YMA Awards, as well as honors in other= categories."

Devon recommends My Government Means to Kil= l Me by Rasheed Newson: "This novel set in New York Cit= y in the 1980s deals with being gay amidst queer political and social rev= olutions. Newson addresses the AIDS epidemic, as well as the familial and= social issues that came along with being a gay black man during this tim= e. This is a queer coming-of-age story that is well researched and provok= ing."
