Live Music

Brian Henke
Thursday, July 23, 2015, 7:00PM
~ Thursday music series ~
Brian Henke composes and performs his music like a painter putting images on canvas, drawing his inspiration from the world around him. An avid hiker, he often brings his guitar along to create a spontaneous response to his outdoor settings. Mother Earth (Terra) as artist has given an immense living gallery from the humbling spectacle of her natural wonders to the simple, beauty of a treetop against a blue sky. Her majestic legacy and the magical feeling of awe and peace inspire the compositions of this award winning virtuosic fingerstyle guitarist.

Christmas in July

Christmas in July Sale

Saturday, July 25, 2015, 10AM—6PM

~ a debut annual sale ~

It’s a good excuse for a sale, right?  We’ll have 50% off Christmas cards and some other favorite tchotchkes like puzzles and games, but we’ll also introduce a sale on mass market paperbacks (perfect for beach and travel reading) with a bag special.  Some of these paperbacks are from storage, so they’re good books that haven’t seen the light of day in a while.  It’s our own special Sidewalk Sale: get ‘em while you can!

Kevin Keating: The Captive Condition
Wednesday, July 29, 2015, 7:00PM
~ a special event ~
A seemingly idyllic Midwestern college town turns out to be a nexus of horror in this spellbinding novel—emotionally and psychologically complex, chilling and deliciously dark. When Emily Ryan is found drowned in the family pool, pumped full of barbiturates and alcohol, Emily’s lover, college professor, finds himself responsible for her twin daughters. A low-level criminal named The Gonk takes over the cottage of a reclusive elderly artist, complete with graveyard and moonshine still, and devises plans for both. His young apprentice, haunted by inner demons, seeks retribution for the professor’s wicked deeds. The town itself, buzzing into decadent life after sundown, traps its inhabitants in patterns of inexplicable behavior all the while drawing them toward a night in which the horror will reach its disturbing and inevitable conclusion.
After working as a boilermaker in the steel mills in Ohio, Kevin Keating became a professor of English and began teaching at Baldwin Wallace University and Cleveland State University. His essays and stories have appeared in more than fifty literary journals. He lives in Cleveland.

Live Music

Shelby and Maria
Thursday, July 30, 2015, 7:00PM
~ Thursday music series ~
Shelby Lynn Sangdahl brings a classical solo cello with a surprise inside. Maria Petti has a sweet smoky voice that compliments her pleasant picking styles. Together, they have provided lovely acoustic sets around Cleveland.  Loganberry sounds like the perfect venue for this duo, don’t you think?

Book Launch & Signing

Paula McLain: Circling the Sun

Friday, July 31, 2015, 7:00PM

~ a special event ~

The bestselling author of The Paris Wife now turns her pen to Beryl Markham, the aviatrix. The world is 1920s Kenya, where a glamorous and decadent circle of British expats have carved out a toe-hold of civilization at the edge of the boundless frontier. Abandoned by her mother and inspired by the dangerous beauty around her, Beryl grows into a fierce young woman driven to prove her courage and win independence at any cost. She becomes the first woman to earn her license as a professional racehorse trainer (at eighteen!); one of the very first people in Africa, and the world, to have a commercial pilot’s license; and the first bush pilot to successfully scout game from the air for safari hunters under impossibly dangerous circumstances.

But the terrain Beryl can’t seem to conquer is her own heart. When she meets safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton (immortalized in Out of Africa), and the Danish author Karen Blixen, she’s catapulted into a passionate love triangle that will change the course of her life. Though neither Blixen or Markham publically acknowledged the relationship in their lifetime, it seared and altered them both, and set Beryl on a course to tackle her greatest adventure yet, flying the Atlantic east to west in 1936, two-thousand feet above the icy waves, without radio contact, alone in the dark for twenty-four hours, trusting her instruments and her instincts.
Paula McLain lives in Cleveland Heights with her family.  We are thrilled to host her national book launch.  Join us for nibbles, a live reading and Q&A with Paula.  You can reserve a copy of the book now at 216-795-9800 or Otis@logan.com.
