Sarah Lohman: Endangered Eating, in conversation with Jeremy Umansky
Thursday, November 30, 7pm
~in-store~
Includes a free tasting of endangered foods mentioned in the book!

In Endangered Eating, culinary historian Sarah Lohman travels the country learning about the distinct ingredients at risk of being lost. Readers follow Lohman to Hawaii, the Navajo Nation, the Upper Midwest, the Pacific Northwest, the Gulf Coast, and to the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Lohman learns from those who love these rare ingredients: shepherds, fishers, and farmers; scientists, historians, and activists. Each chapter includes two recipes, so readers can be a part of saving these ingredients by purchasing and preparing them.

Sarah Lohman is the author of Eight Flavors and her work has been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. Formerly the Curator of Food Programming at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, she currently works with institutions around the country to create public programs focused on food. Originally from Hinckley, OH, she currently lives in Las Vegas.

Jeremy Umansky is a chef/owner of Larder in Cleveland, Ohio, nominated by the James Beard Foundation as the Best New Restaurant in America in 2019. He is the author of the James Beard Award-nominated cookbook Koji Alchemy.

Harriett recommends Wild Girls by Tiya Miles: "This collection of essays by Tiya Miles celebrates naturalists in womens' activism. Tiya Miles shows how in the natural world, Harriet Tubman, Louise May Alcott, Sacagawea, Zitkála-Šá, Grace Lee Boggs, and the Fort Shaw Indigenous women’s basketball team found power and authenticity to resist assimilation, racism, and sexism."

9781668005255

Devon recommends You or Someone You Love by Hannah Matthews: "In my opinion, this is one of the most necessary books of 2023. Matthews presents us with true abortion stories from a myriad of diverse individuals to show how imperative reproductive healthcare is, regardless of class, race, gender, or sexuality. The perfect gift for all the social justice advocates in your life!"

9780823449651

Leigh recommends A Walk in the Woods by Nikki Grimes: "This is a gorgeously illustrated meditation on the healing powers of nature, which follows a young boy who has lost his father and turns to the woods for comfort. The book began as a collaboration between Nikki Grimes and Jerry Pinkney, and proved prophetic when Jerry Pinkney died during the project, and his son Brian was brought in to help finish the book. A beautiful gift for nature lovers and those seeking to heal from grief."

71WmsRXxEIL. AC UF1000 1000 QL80

Sarah recommends The Deluge by Stephen Markley: "This is a perfect novel for the reader who loves big, thoughtful, compelling, character-driven novels about climate change. It takes place over 20 years as groups try to help--and hinder--each other, while the world (and the characters) succumb in the fight. Heartbreaking and extremely important."

Untitled-design-28

Freddy recommends Spark Birds by Orion Magazine: "A book of essays and poems about owls, cranes, finches, penguins, buzzards, and more by the people who love them, published by Orion Magazine. These writings by Mary Oliver, Drew Lanham, Terry Tempest Williams, and others make a great gift for the bird lovers in your life who don’t need another field guide!"

81dZFEG52GL. AC UF1000 1000 QL80

Adrienne recommends Petra by Marianna Coppo: "This board book is the sweetest gift for the kiddo who can BE ANYTHING! Throw in a Good Rock and some paints for an experiential gift for the whole family to share. I would follow expressive, imaginative, rock-of-all-trades Petra anywhere."

9781637152065

Elisabeth recommends The Sprite & The Gardener by Rii Abrego: "Perfect for the kid or teen in your life who maybe feels unsure about reading but thinks fairies are cool. The gorgeous artwork and gentle story will lift anyone’s spirits who’s trying to make the world more beautiful but is feeling ground down by the upward slog, or anyone who could use the reminder that comradeship comes from places we’ll never even guess."

9781250875334

Rachel recommends The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei: "Asuka is one of a select few chosen to populate a new planet in the shadow of Earth's climate death. She tries to ignore interpersonal mishaps and political strife, until she finds herself at the center of an attack on her crew and their mission--and she’s the prime suspect. Perfect for fans of Tamsyn Muir and Ann Leckie’s queer, genre-bending sci-fi."

9781250328120

Julie recommends Tilly in Technicolor by Mazey Eddings Mailhot "This is a teen romance with a twist: neither partner can figure out that they like each other, despite constant flirting. This is one for readers who seek slow burn romance at its finest. A fun read for adults, too!"

9781590176467

Wendy recommends Turtle Diary by Russell Hoban "NYRB Classics fans rejoice! This reprint of Russell Hoban's 1975 gem is a wonderful treat. Two lonely Londoners unite over their shared desire to free giant sea turtles from the zoo. Told in alternating voices, this heartwarming story will stick with you long after you turn the last page. It's the perfect book for someone who has read everything, but somehow missed this quiet treasure."

9781087991290

Cara recommends Unto Dogs by Stephanie Ginese: "2023 Cleveland Arts Prize winner Stephanie Ginese's debut poetry collection is a perfect gift for anyone in your life who knows that poetry is political. Unto Dogs explores the ongoing effects of colonialism and how this history has shaped the poet into the person she is today."

9781590178218

Elijah recommends Augustus by John Williams: "Best known for his "perfect novel" Stoner, Augustus might be Williams' even greater masterpiece, an epistolary novel that traces Octavian’s rise and follows him and those close to him throughout his reign. A perfect gift for the man (or person of any description!) in your life who can't stop thinking about the Roman Empire!"

9781324065401

Toni recommends: Dayswork by Chris Batchelder & Jennifer Habel: "My favorite book of 2023: this academic-pandemic novel about an English scholar's obsession with the friendship between Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne is nothing like what you would expect from that description. Dayswork is funny, fascinating, and a sheer delight. The kind of book you can't wait to get back to when you are in your real life. Deep thinking in deceptively small, light bites."

Thanks for reading,
Harriett & all the Loganberries
