Amy Schiller: The Price of Humanity
Sunday, January 14, 3pm
~in-store~
Join author and philanthropy expert Amy Schiller, in conversation about her new book, The Price of Humanity, with Jan Roller.

The scope of suffering in the world seems to demand an industry of giving, and yet for all the billions that are dispensed, the wealthy never seem to lose any of their money and nothing seems to change. Journalist, academic and consultant Amy Schiller shows how we get out of this stalemate by evaluating the history of philanthropy from the ideas of St. Augustine to the work of LeBron James. She argues philanthropy’s contemporary tendency to maintain obscene inequality and reduce every cause to dehumanizing technocratic terms is unacceptable, while maintaining an optimism about the soul and potential of philanthropy in principle.

Amy Schiller is a journalist, academic, and consultant. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Dartmouth College in the Society of Fellows. Her writing has been published in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Nation, and The Daily Beast.

Jan Roller has served on the boards of a number of non-profits, including Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, City Year Cleveland, the Refugee Response, and Near West Theatre. In May 2023 she received a Living Legacy Award from the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.

Susan Petrone: The Musical Mozinskis
Friday, January 19, 7pm
~in-store~
Join us for the launch of beloved local author Susan Petrone's new novel, The Musical Mozinskis! Come early (6:30pm) to enjoy refreshments and pre-show music by George Foley and Gene Epstein. A reading and book talk will commence at 7:15, followed by Q&A and more music.

Struggling musicians Vincent Mozinski and Grace Klinefelter marry in the early 1960s, drawn together by their shared ability to see the music they play--a skill they pass on to their musical prodigy offspring: Clara, Ellington, Bix, Allegro, Thelonious, and Viola. The family is tapped as one of several amateur acts to perform on a nationally televised Bicentennial celebration, leading to a recording contract and ultimately the pinnacle of 1970s stardom, their own musical variety show. The success of The Musical Mozinskis depends on the family's ability to keep churning out talented children. There's only one problem: Viola is tone deaf.

Susan Petrone is the author of the The Heebie-Jeebie Girl The Super Ladies, Throw Like a Woman, and A Body at Rest a bronze medalist for regional fiction from the Independent Publishers Book Awards (IPPY). She is a Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award recipient and a Pushcart Prize nominee. She is also one of the co-founders and former president of Literary Cleveland (litcleveland.org).

Harriett recommends Njuta: The Swedish Art of Savoring the Moment by Niki Brantmark: "Instead of harsh New Year's Resolutions, might I recommend the art of njuta? This sweet little book provides cultural background and practical advice to applying its meditative philosophy to every aspect of your life. Along the way, you'll even learn some cool new Swedish words like smultronställe and vinterbad and perhaps learn to savor the moment like a feline livsnjutare."

9780525537786

Cara recommends The Rumi Prescription by Melody Moezzi: "Moezzi, who lives with bipolar disorder, goes on a linguistic pilgrimage translating the mystical poet Rumi's work into English. Through both the process of translating and connecting with her ancestral past, she finds peace, meaning, and connection in our wild, modern world. A perfect read to start the new year!"

9781982188719

Devon recommends You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akaeke Emezi: "This amazing contemporary Black romance abounds with surprises. The cast is diverse, intelligent, and fun, but still very human with flaws and shortcomings. Grief is an ongoing theme in the novel, but it is that feeling that ultimately brings the featured couple together. Highly recommended for fans of contemporary fiction and romance."

9781541603080

Elisabeth recommends Before We Were Trans by Kit Heyam: "This sweeping history was the most paradigm shifting (and widening!) book I read last year, and I can't think of a better way to start off 2024. Dr. Heyam's accessible, compassionate book invites us into a more expansive, deeply textured relationship not just with gender, but with history itself."

9780593083888

Julie recommends The Myth of Normal by Gabor Maté: "This is a great book to start the year off right. Maté provides a whole new perspective on many things related to health and how society affects our health. It's a large book, but an easy read, and definitely worth the time."

9780593729823

Wendy recommends The Golem of Brooklyn by Adam Mansbach: "Bored stoner art teacher Len Bronstein steals clay from the school where he works and creates a golem, a mythical creature who defends Jewish people from immediate threats of violence. It's one thing to create and animate the golem, but Len is in way over his head when it comes to communicating with the golem. He enlists the help of a bodega clerk who is fluent in Yiddish, and together they embark on a journey to wrestle with big questions of humanity, vengeance, faith, and healing."

s-l960

Freddy recommends Horse by Geraldine Brooks: "I'm a longtime Geraldine Brooks fan, but somehow, even when Horse topped so many end of year "Best of" lists, it remained unopened on my TBR pile. Time rolls by, other tempting books come along: you know how it is! But I finally decided to cross Horse off my to-do list, and what a pleasure it was, with all Brooks' usual flair for pairing historical fiction with a contemporary story to create something of ongoing interest. Pick it up and you'll be assured of utter satisfaction."

C90E938B11B86186E23201E1ABB0289C0B0957A1

Toni recommends The Devil's Daughter by Gordon Greisman: "I thoroughly enjoyed this jazzy debut noir that publishes on 1/23/24. PI Jack Coffey is a quintessential tough guy with a heart of gold, who somehow knows everyone from Thelonius Monk to Meyer Lansky to Marlon Brando. The evocation of 1957 Manhattan will charm anyone who loves the city, and the supporting characters and the mystery are compelling, both horrifying and heartfelt."
