Salutations!
This fall is a big deal in bookland, with major new
releases by accomplished and favorite writers, from E.L. Doctorow to Steig
Larsson and Margaret Atwood to Dan Chaon. And the regional GLiBA book trade show takes place
in Cleveland this year, this weekend! As a primarily used bookdealer, I
don’t always get this excited about new books, but this is a big deal indeed.
And Loganberry has all of these new releases (plus others), and you can
always place special orders with us. Let us know your favorites! Oh,
and happy Banned Books Week, read a banned book today!

Barb Bonchek: Dizzy Art
Thursday, October 1, 6-8pm
~ first Thursdays ~
Barb Bonchek's Dizzy Art designs are all hand drawn with
no mechanical means. But you might have to take a step closer to verify,
and then a step back to re-orient yourself. It's called Dizzy Art for a
reason, but is that reason visual or psychological? All those tiny
lines... It's worth a second look. Framed original art pieces,
prints, and cards will be available for purchase during the show.
Please join us for the opening reception!
Gene's Jazz Hot
CD Release Party: Live, Love, Laugh & Be Happy
Thursday, September 10, 7-9pm
~ second Thursdays ~
These four good friends have been improvising hot jazz
for years. Here is consummate musicianship coupled with the excitement of
a front porch jam session. Even if you don’t know the words you’ll be singing
along and dancing around the room in no time. Especially this
month, as there is cause for celebration: a new cd! Come join the
celebration.
Vocalist Peggi Cella is a soulful, inventive
improviser, who has been singing all her life. Bassist and singer Gene Epstein
is a popular Cleveland area string bassist and band leader. Guitarist and
singer Seth Rosen has rock-steady rhythm and deliciously colorful
harmonies. Clarinetist and singer Bill Kenney is a virtuosic performer
with an irrepressible sense of fun and is an eminent historian with several
jazz history books currently in print. Read the review in Cool Cleveland!

G538:
Greyhound Dogs
It's a book I read in the Mid-late 60s about a brother
& sister around 12 years old. With the help of a group of stray dogs
(greyhounds, I believe) they solve a crime or mystery in town. They get
to keep all the dogs at the end of the story. Also the boy sprains his
ankle towards the end of the book & the doctor makes a house call.
The kids mother doesn't want the dogs on the boys bed because they may hurt his
sprained ankle. Also the boy sneaks turkey to the dogs when he gets
dinner in bed because of his ankle injury.

paring, and pasting leather. What are inlays, onlays and tooling?
Bring your questions and see great leather binding. $3 suggested donation.

Tove Jansson: The Summer Book
Thursday, October 22, 7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
In The Summer Book
Tove Jansson distills the essence of the summer—its sunlight and storms—into
twenty-two crystalline vignettes. This brief novel tells the story of Sophia, a
six-year-old girl awakening to existence, and Sophia’s grandmother, nearing the
end of hers, as they spend the summer on a tiny unspoiled island in the Gulf of
Finland. The grandmother is unsentimental and wise, if a little cranky; Sophia
is impetuous and volatile, but she tends to her grandmother with the care of a
new parent. Together they amble over coastline and forest in easy
companionship, build boats from bark, create a miniature Venice, write a
fanciful study of local bugs. They discuss things that matter to young and old
alike: life, death, the nature of God and of love. “On an island,” thinks the
grandmother, “everything is complete.” In The Summer Book, Jansson creates her
own complete world, full of the varied joys and sorrows of life. Join us
as we travel to Finland, with our personal tour guide Gene who was recently in
Finland! Book Club will then take a long winter break before reconvening
January 28 to discuss Muriel Barbery’s The
Elegance of the Hedgehog.

Jane Austen: Sense and Sensibility
Thursday, October 22, 7pm
~ fourth Thursdays ~
Despite the current trend of literary mash-ups, this
group is NOT reading the recently published Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters (although
the book trailer is
indeed fabulous). No, we’re reading the original. Can’t remember a
single sea monster in it. I can barely remember water, but I’ll pay
attention this time. Join us as we discuss the Dashwood sisters and their
various attempts at financial security – I mean, marriage. We’ll then take
a long winter break before regrouping January 28th to discuss BOTH Mansfield Park and Emma. We look forward to seeing you!
peace,
Harriett
