Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Irish History Month!  We’ve had fun assembling a window display of Irish writers (Behan, Beckett, Binchy, Bowen, Joyce, Kinsella, O’Brien, O’Casey, Yeats, etc.) and rounding up a full playlist of Celtic and Irish music (from the Clancy Brothers to the Pogues)  for toe-tapping browsing.  Come join us for a book-buyin’ reel.

F393: Futuristic graphic novel/comic about the last acorn or seed

It's set in a world where you have to wear a gas mask while you are outside. A little girl goes to visit a museum and finds the last acorn/seed. She then flies (maybe on a bird?) up above the smog and plants the seed. In her world there are no trees so she is shocked and doesn’t really know what it is.

Harriett was afraid to enter the digital world until she saw an exquisite line of shapes in a sidewalk crack at Wade Oval.  She bought a camera the next week and uses it every day to record the beauty which encouraged her to face her fears. And to think, she used to just be looking down for pennies!!!  Show continues through April 4.

Restoration Bookbinding

Saturdays, March 12 – April 30, 10am—1pm

A class for people with basic bookbinding knowledge.  This class will teach you how to replace detached covers, resew loose signatures, repair broken spines and do simple paper repairs.  Work on your own book repair projects with the opportunity to observe and learn additional techniques as other participants work on theirs.  $250.  Contact Strong Bindery.

Gene Stromberg:  Narrow Collecting – Why do we do it?

A book collection can be defined any way you want:  history or poetry, modern fiction, children’s, favorite authors, mysteries, or math and science…and so on.  They can become more inclusive or more narrowly defined—military history, then Civil War, then Civil War generals.  What draws us to extremes?  Gene Stromberg will describe how it happened to him—collecting children’s books, the single children’s book written by an author known for writing for adults.  It wasn’t planned, but ignited by a single book and a question, “How many of these are there?”  Many, but not a lot, as it turns out.  Highlights and setbacks will be presented.  If you know of an example, bring the book or bring a list.

Edible Books Festival
Saturday, April 2, 1pm
Our eighth annual festival approaches!  It is a creative contest with only one rule: make edible art that has something to do with books.  How people interpret this single rule is wherein lies the fun.  There are four official awards this year (won by popular vote and awarded appropriate books): the Logan Award for Most Literary, the Strong Award for Most Book-like, the Otis Award for Most Appetizing, and the Zober Award for Most Creative.  As always, the festivities are free, but for the additional pleasure of voting for and eating the edible book creations, a $3 fee helps keep the festival going.  Bring your friends, family, and kids.  Please register your entries, help spread the word (pdf flyer), and visit our website for a complete catalog of past events to get your imagination going.
