Jowan Smith is CEO of an educational consulting firm and a nonprofit 1,000 Ties. Jowan has written a total of five children's books featuring Characters of Color in real life situations. Sometimes known as the Father of Biodiversity, E.O. Wilson was a biologist, writer and naturalist who spent his life advocating for the environment and won the Pulitzer Prize twice. Wilson’s last book, Half-Earth, proposes a plan to save our planet and diversity. This will be a hybrid event, with the in-person portion of the event meeting at Loganberry. Join Jennifer Larson, Professor of Classics at Kent State University, for an exploration of miniature and little books. In her presentation, Dr. Larson will use books from her own collection to explore how diminutive format was related to content in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Miniature and small formats were favored not only for devotionals, almanacs, and children’s literature, but also for inexpensive school books, forbidden or “obscene” works, and as samples of fine printing. TQBC will alternate months with For the Thrill of Lit, our new thriller/horror/mystery club that begins the third Thursday in April. Our 2023 lineup of monthly shows by local artists in the Loganberry Books Annex Gallery kicks off this month with Junree Weeams! Jurnee Weeams is a 20-year-old artist from the Buckeye-Shaker area of Cleveland whose pieces celebrate Black people and women, convey personal joys and worries, or are just pieces that would make someone laugh. Weeams says: "I create to grow, to feel and process the happenings of everyday, to communicate when I can’t find the right words, to express love, pride, hope, sadness, fear; truly, the reasons could go on. He writes poetry, prose poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, and is currently working on a novel. Douglass Day is an annual program that marks the birth of Frederick Douglass. Each year, thousands of people participate in a Transcribe-a-thon to help create new & freely available resources for learning about Black history as an act of community celebration and care. This year, the focus is on the writings of Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893), one of the earliest Black women to edit a newspaper, serve as a Civil War recruiter, and attend law school. Participants will be prompted to online resources to type that will build the base of this new historical resource. Bring a laptop! We'll provide the rest!
